Gauteng on Thursday had 1,252 confirmed Covid-19 cases, with 843 recoveries and eight deaths.

The number of active cases in the province is 391.

According to the Gauteng health department update, Johannesburg has 748 cases, Ekurhuleni has 268, while Tshwane is on 127. Sedibeng is on 13 and the West Rand on 42. About 54 patients are unallocated.

“Out of a total of 7,599 contacts traced, 3,492 people have completed the 14 days monitoring period with no symptoms reported and therefore they are de-isolated.

“There are 58 people hospitalised in both public and private facilities,” said Kwara Kenana, health MEC spokesperson.

The unallocated cases in the district breakdown refer to confirmed cases in Gauteng that are yet to be allocated to one of the five districts in the province.

“Allocating Gauteng cases to respective districts is ongoing. After obtaining further information on contact numbers and addresses from law enforcement agencies, provincial outbreak teams and the National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD), we are able to make corrections where a case might have been incorrectly allocated to a particular district,” Kekana said.

Gauteng’s virus hotspots are Alex, Sandton, Houghton, Orange Grove and Wynberg

Sandton, Houghton, Orange Grove, Alexandra and Wynberg are among the Covid-19 hotspots in Gauteng, with a combined 227 positive cases as of Wednesday.

Maybe he just couldn’t bear to watch the country suffering another week of lockdown.

Otherwise, it appears that at least one of the skills that will become a reality for the foreseeable future – how to put on a cloth face mask to prevent the spread of the coronavirus – still needs some practice in the Union Buildings.

Within minutes, memes started doing the rounds and a Twitter challenge was born, proving that South Africans’ sense of humour hasn’t been dimmed by the lockdown. And if the president doesn’t want to see the memes, he can just put on his mask…

The Western Cape now has the highest number of Covid-19 positive cases in the country as the death toll climbed to 75 by Thursday evening.

Gauteng has 1,252 confirmed cases of Covid-19 while the Western Cape has 1,279 cases, the health ministry said on Thursday.

As testing for the virus is significantly ramped up, it emerged on Thursday that there were 318 cases confirmed since the previous figures were released on Wednesday.

This was the highest number of positive infections recorded in a day.

SA is fast approaching the 4,000 mark with the total number of infections having increased to 3,953.

The health ministry was not despondent at the growing number of positive cases, adding that community screening and testing was yielding positive results by quickly detecting those who were infected.

The death toll, however, also continued to rise.

Ten new fatalities were reported on Thursday, raising the total to 75. The majority of them were in the Western Cape.

A criminal case of crimen injuria has been opened against a Durban woman after she called President Cyril Ramaphosa an ape on her social media post.

A case of crimen injuria has been opened against a woman for allegedly referring to President Cyril Ramaphosa as an “ape trying to act like a first world president” in a Facebook post.

It is understood that a Bluff man took offence to a social media post by a woman from Pinetown on Tuesday and immediately went to the Brighton Beach police station to open a case against her.

In the post, the woman accused the government of being at fault for the current national lockdown and the coronavirus pandemic.

The man, who didn’t want to reveal his identity, said he was offended and found the post to be in bad taste.

“On the 23rd of April, I went up to my nearest police station in Brighton Beach to lodge a complaint and open a case against a lady that sent a Facebook page suggesting that the President is an ape pretending to act like a president of a first-world country. I did find the post distasteful and I did [not] hesitate to open up a case.”

Police spokesperson Brig Vishnu Naidoo confirmed that woman had allegedly referred to the president in a derogatory manner on her Facebook page.

“The case was registered at Brighton Beach police station at about 8pm on Tuesday,” said Naidoo.

The woman deactivated her Facebook account shortly after the post went viral.

The presidency didn’t immediately respond.

Cigarettes sales ,outdoor exercise to be eased from May 1, but booze ban stays

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressing the nation on Thursday, 23 April 2020.

Cigarette sales will be permitted when the lockdown is partially eased from May 1.

This is one of the looming changes announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa when he addressed the nation on Thursday night about government’s plan to impose various levels of lockdown to tackle the coronavirus pandemic and restart the economy.

Alcohol sales, however, will not be permitted.

Bars and shebeens will also remain closed.

The liquor and cigarette industries had threatened legal challenges to overturn the prohibitions, implemented at the start of the lockdown on April 27, citing the loss of its customers to illegal traders and the large loss of taxes to the government.

Under the slightly eased regulations, from May 1, Ramaphosa said the country’s borders will remain closed except for the repatriation of citizens. The ban on travel between provinces will largely remain, except for the transportation of goods and in some cases for funerals.

Public transport will operate with a limited number of passengers but they will all have to wear face masks, said Ramaphosa.

While the sale of cigarettes will be permitted, so will outdoor exercise under strict conditions. These are yet to be revealed.

Mass gatherings at places such as bars, shebeens, concert venues, cinemas, sporting events and religious gatherings will remain prohibited.

The stringent regulation of banning the sale of alcohol during lockdown has led to a major decline in violent crimes.

Hard lockdown to end April 30: President Cyril Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has unveiled new levels of Coronavirus which will determine which sectors of the economy would be opened in certain areas.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday night the country would implement a partial easing of the current Covid-19 lockdown after April 30, to spare the economy and save jobs.

“Beyond Thursday the 30th of April we will implement a risk adjusted strategy to take a deliberate and cautious approach to ease lockdown restrictions,” he announced.

“The strategy we take now must be measured and incremental.

“We cannot take action today that we deeply regret tomorrow.

“We have to balance the need to resume economic activity with the need to save lives.

“While a nationwide lockdown is probably the best means to contain the virus, it cannot be sustained indefinitely. Our people need to eat. They need to earn a living. Companies need to generate revenue.”

Ramaphosa said some businesses would be allowed to resume operations under specific conditions.

The return of the workforce will be no more than one-third per business.

A work from home strategy is still encouraged.

Shortly before the president’s speech, the health ministry announced there were 318 new confirmed Covid-19 cases in SA, with the total number of confirmed cases at 3,953. Ten new deaths were reported, resulting in a total of 75 Covid-19 deaths across the country.

Ramaphosa announced a R500bn stimulus package earlier this week, on which finance minister Tito Mboweni will provide more details on Friday.
