They lived together, worked together and often hit the gym together. They were so in love that they were seen as couple goals.

Connie took to social media to pay tribute to ‘my soulmate’.
“This day, 20 years ago (31 July 2001), was the day God brought you into my life, and we haven’t looked back since! Ours is a once in a lifetime kind of love. We joked about how we were going to be in our old age. How we would take turns supporting each other and being strong for each other. The irony is we have already been doing that for the past 20 years!

“Oh how God has loved me to give me YOU! We were already planning our 20th wedding anniversary in November, assuming that we had time! You and I were joined at the hip, now I feel completely off balance, incomplete, without my other half! My SOULMATE!,” she posted.
She said she was struggling to process everything that had happened.
“It all just feels like a horrible nightmare that I can’t wake up from! I feel like I’m living in a twilight zone! I keep asking God WHY? Why Lord? Please help me understand! I trust you! I trust you to see me and my family through this! Please give me and my family the strength to carry on, and continue our hero’s legacy! Only YOU can!”

Government offers further relief for businesses in South Africa – but warns it won’t be a ‘free for all’

Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) has rendered relief against income loss to approximately 5.4 million workers with over R61.2 billion disbursed, according to South African labour minister Thulas Nxesi.
A further extension until 15 March 2021 assisted up to 74,000 workers where over R703 million was paid, he said in a media briefing on Wednesday (28 July).

Under the recent adjusted level 4 lockdown, the fund has extended this relief further with an estimated budget of R5.3 billion for which applications have been opened, the minister said.
The Department of Employment and Labour said it is committed to assisting with the various government interventions for businesses and workers affected by the recent unrests in the country, as announced by president Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday evening.
“According to our own assessment about 75,000 employees have been affected by the latest unrests in (KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng) and this may mean temporary work stoppage or an outright retrenchment,” Nxesi said.

The Unemployment Insurance Fund has a basket of benefits that can serve as an intervention mechanism to the affected workers and companies as a result of the unrest.
“It should be mentioned up front that there is currently no benefit quite suitable for the current situation, and Covid-19 TERS cannot be applicable as it was established as an intervention for a disaster situation.
“Therefore, the current benefits under the Unemployment Insurance Act are the only interventions available to cover the affected workers; however, in order to ensure that some of the basic tenets of the Act are not violated, the department is going to draft a special directive dealing with the affected workers in the two provinces.”

The spirit of the directive, Nxesi said, would be to ensure that workers who would normally not qualify for these benefits due to non-compliance with the Act are able to access the benefits.
“However, I should emphasise that it will not be a free for all, the criteria to determine who qualifies is going to be very stringent and payments will not be generous. While it is our desire to pay all affected workers; it should be borne in mind that finance is a limited resource.”
Nxesi said he has instructed officials to gather data of businesses that have been affected, and also perform an analysis of those who will afford to carry their employee’s salaries during this period.
“On the basis of this analysis we shall be able to indicate the benefit calculation that we will follow; whether it is a flat rate across the board, an Income Replacement Rate, or a combination of the two – depending on the nature of the application.”
The minister said that details pertaining to who qualifies, payment structure, the application process and the duration of the payment period will be outlined in the direction.
“We are mindful of the urgency of the matter, therefore we commit to expediting the process of drafting and approval of the directive. The UIF already has a system in place that will help fast track the payments.”

The department said that businesses or companies in distress following the unrests can also apply for the normal Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS). TERS is designed to assist companies who are temporarily in distress, but with a plan in place to turn the business around within a period of 6 to 12 months, said Nxesi.
Applications for TERS are made via the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), and an independent adjudication committee evaluates all proposals and makes a recommendation to the Director-General of the Department of Employment and Labour.
Upon approval by the DG, the UIF then process the claim and monitor the implementation of the programme.
“It is a reality that some of the businesses will not fully recover from the damage of the unrest, which will result in retrenchments. The UIF will ensure that it prioritises those retrenched employees in some of the Labour Activation Programmes that are designed to place retrenched workers in employment opportunities,” Nxesi said.

The R350 distress social grant has been reinstated for the next seven months.
The reinstatement was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his address to the nation on Sunday.
The grant will be paid monthly until the end of March 2022.
Here are six things you need to know.
Who qualifies for the grant?
According to the department of social development, the grant is “intended for persons in dire material need that are unable to meet their families’ most basic needs”.
This could be due to any of the following circumstances:

You need help while you wait for your children’s grants to be processed
A crisis or disaster has occurred (for example your house has burnt down)
You do not qualify for a grant, and you are in a desperate situation
You are unable to work for a period of less than six months because you are medically unfit
You are unable to get maintenance from the other parent of your child or children
The breadwinner in the family has died
The breadwinner has been sent to prison for a short time (less than six months)
You have been affected by a disaster, but the area or community in which you live has not been declared a disaster area.
The grant has also been expanded to include unemployed caregivers who currently receive a child support grant.
“We are expanding the number of people who are eligible for this grant by allowing unemployed caregivers who currently receive a child support grant to apply,” said Ramaphosa.
What do I get?
The social relief of distress grant may be in the form of a food parcel or a voucher to buy food.
In some provinces, those eligible for this grant get assistance in the form of cash.

How long will I get it for?
Social relief of distress is given for a short time only — usually for up to three months, which may be extended for another three months.
Eligible for the R350 grant? You have to reapply from scratch
People who are eligible to receive the R350 Covid-19 social relief of distress grant are required to start the application process from scratch.
How can I apply for the grant?
According to social development minister Lindiwe Zulu, people who are eligible to receive the R350 grant are required to start the application process from scratch.
To apply, eligible applicants must submit their application forms at the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) office with a 13-digit bar-coded identity document or an affidavit if an identity document is not available.
You will also need to show proof that they have applied for a grant, proof that you are in need, provide banking details, contact details and proof of residence.
“No applications for the special grant will be made via telephone, email or USSD,” warned Sassa.
How long does the process take?
Zulu told eNCA that the process can take time due to the number of applications submitted.

Once an application is submitted, it will be assessed for credibility and whether the applicant has a genuine need for the service.
According to the department, even if applicants do not have all the documents, those eligible will get their first month’s food parcel, voucher or cash.
“Remember to take all the documents to the officer before the second month’s payment is due. If you do not, you may not get your second and third month’s food parcel, voucher or cash,” it said.
Is there back pay?
The grant will be paid from the date of approval up to when it ends, provided the qualifying criteria listed continue to be met.
This means if applicants apply in September, their payments will be from September and there will be no back pay for the months not applied for.

“There is no set date for R350 SRD payments. We will back-date all the months due to you” explained SASSA.
In more recent news, SASSA will be reintroducing the R350 grant soon. On Wednesday afternoon, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni held a media address to give more details about this grant as well as other measurements government has put in place to give South Africans aid.
Deputy Director General of Public Finance, Dr Mampho Modise said the newly introduced grant will not be picking up where the previous grant left off.
This means no back payments will be made for the months that the old grant was not active. Applicants for the new grant will also have to follow a new application process.
“The R350 is not an extension of the previous grant that was introduced and terminated in May. Rather, it’s a reintroduction of the grant and it will commence right now rather than a continuation of what we’ve done in the past”
“This is a starting point rather than backpaying for the months that the grant was not in existence.” explained Modise.
More details about the grant and application process have not yet been released.
