President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday to discuss the province’s plans and monitor its state of readiness for combating the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ramaphosa will meet KZN premier Sihle Zikalala on Tuesday morning and visit sites identified as Covid-19 facilities.

According to a statement issued by the premier’s office on Monday, the president will engage with the provincial government and stakeholders on the province’s response strategies and progress being made to flatten the curve of infections.

He will then visit the Dr Pixley Isaka Seme provincial hospital in KwaMashu, north of Durban, which is one of the hospitals designated to manage Covid-19.

The president will conclude his KZN visit with an inspection at the Agricultural Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg, which has been designated as a quarantine or isolation facility for patients.

KZN accounts for the third most Covid-19 cases in the country, with 1,076 people having tested positive for the virus as of Sunday.

Last week Zikalala gave a breakdown of the number of confirmed cases in the province.

He said KZN had contributed nearly 21% of new cases.

Zikalala said another worrying factor was that 121 health-care workers had tested positive in the province – up from 108 the previous week.

It is understood that Zikalala will update the media with the latest stats in the province during the week.

The provincial leadership has on more than one occasion stated its concern about the number of cases in eThekwini, the epicentre of the virus in the province.

The laptops were stolen from Jonathan Thifhulufhelwi Secondary School in Madombidzha village.

At least 24 laptops were stolen after criminals broke into a school storeroom in Limpopo.

Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said the police at Tshilwavhusiku in the Makhado Cluster in Limpopo have launched a manhunt for unknown number of suspects who allegedly broke into the storeroom at Jonathan Thifhulufhelwi secondary school at Madombidzha village and stole 24 Laptops valued at R120,000. The incident took place between Friday and Saturday.

“The principal of the school called the police and informed them about the incident and on arrival it was discovered that the suspects gained entry by cutting the burglar door of the store room where the laptops were kept.

Prior to the burglary, the suspects reportedly cut electrical cables to disable the alarm systems, ” he said.

Mojapelo added that the burglary was apparently discovered by the security guard who became aware of the burglary when he was patrolling the premises on Saturday.

“We make an appeal to anyone with information about the suspects or someone selling HP laptops to contact the station commander of Tshilwavhusiku Lt-Col Maphefo Matshavha on 0824517163 or Crime Stop number 0860010111 or the nearest police station,” he said.

A case of burglary has been opened and police investigations are continuing.

Last week Mbekhwana high school in Mandlakazi village was broken into and thieves stole soccer jersey to the value of R6,000.

I wish I was sitting on money,’ Jacob Zuma in interview with Duduzane

Jacob and Duduzane Zuma. They have appeared in what appears to be a trailer of a reality show soon to be released in full.

Does former president Jacob Zuma have millions of rands or dollars stashed away in a bunker at his Nkandla home?

No, at least that is according to him, in a reply to a question posed by his son Duduzane in an interview in what appears to be a trailer of a reality show soon to be released in full.

The video has gone viral on social media.

In it, the duo talk about wide-ranging political issues, including the treatment of deputy president David Mabuza in Russia for alleged poisoning and Duduzane’s role in it.

Zuma also comments about state capture, and denies his involvement in it, saying there is no shred of evidence implicating him.

At the beginning of the trailer, Duduzane asks his father to comment on allegations that he is stinking rich.

Zuma responds: “I wish I was sitting on money but nobody has showed me where is this money that I am sitting on. Nobody has said here was Zuma and the state capture that has made me [rich].”

Duduzane then goes on to comfort his father.

“To a certain degree I can say I feel your pain, we do not run away from these issues but we confront them because that is who we are,” said Duduzane who also offered his opinion of the Covid-19 lockdown which he believes “was a bit premature”.

Zuma Jr also provides insight about his involvement in the “clandestine” mission to get Mabuza to Moscow for treatment.

Said Duduzane: “There was a problem and this had to do at that time he was the premier of Mpumalanga and now he is Deputy President Mabuza.

“The premier of Mpumalanga at that time was not doing well health wise, so [they said] what we need from you is an airlifting from Nelspruit and a passage on a private plane because this thing had to be kept as clandestine as possible, through to Moscow so he can seek medical treatment.

“I said okay what is the problem, only to find out that the suspicion was that he had been poisoned.”

Counterfeit cigarettes worth R3m seized in KZN raid

Cartons of cigarettes worth R3m were seized during a raid in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.

An estimated R3m worth of counterfeit cigarettes were seized from a warehouse in Phoenix, north of Durban, on Sunday.

Provincial economic development spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said crime intelligence was working to identify the owners of the warehouse.

“At this stage, we can report that inspectors from the department’s consumer protection unit and business regulations, together with the employment and labour department, crime intelligence, Durban metro police, home affairs’ immigration unit, the police and Sars have been hard at work over the weekend and the past few days,” the department said on Sunday.

The raid was part of a larger operation by the provincial economic development department, Sars and law enforcement in their bid to stop alleged counterfeit goods syndicates.

“Sars reported that these syndicates exploit differential taxes on highly taxed goods such as cigarettes, alcohol and petroleum. They sometimes choose not to declare their goods, bribe officials or transport their goods through illegal and unmonitored routes, ” said the department.

“The syndicates are also involved in fraudulent transactions involving under-declarations of imported goods. They are known to double invoice for the purpose of using undervalued invoices for declarations.”

Meanwhile, a foreigner was arrested and his shop shut down in Durban for selling counterfeit medication worth millions.

Another foreigner was arrested for selling expired sweets.

KwaZulu-Natal economic development MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube is expected to visit the harbour on Monday after R3m worth of fake goods were seized there.

Music industry stakeholders ask department for second call on Covid-19 relief fund application

By: illovuonline news team

The local music industry stakeholders have called on department of sport, arts and culture (DSAC) to reconsider a second call for funding after many Covid-19 relief fund applications did not make the cut due to lack of basic information and appropriate documents.

DSAC has received 5,000 applications and 1,050 have been adjudicated so far. Out of the 1,050 that have been adjudicated, 232 were approved and 603 did not make the cut while 203 were referred back to DSAC for consultation.

South African Music Industries (Samic) has called on the DSAC to consider opening a second call for funding applications because they wanted assistance for music industry practitioners during this difficult time.

Samic spokesperson Stanley Khoza said: “Musicians and music sector organisations are already struggling financially due to lack of work opportunities and we need to support them so that they can work and take care of their families.”

“South African Music Industry Council has not to close the opportunity for funding based only on compliance related issues. We call on the DSAC to work with sector organisations and other stakeholders to resolve all flagged compliance challenges.”

Addressing the media on Monday, Mthethwa voiced his concerns that the largest number of rejected applications were from artists who were seemingly in a greater need of relief fund. He said the reason that led to rejection of the application included missing document, unfilled documents, missing cancellation documents and missing contract documents.

Mthethwa said some applications had no proof at postponement or cancellation documents.

“We were especially concerned after the adjudication committee advised us of some of their reasons which some of them showed lack of resources. However, it is important to note that the applicants who were not recommended have the option to address the appeals committee,” he said.

Mthethwa said moving forward, he was going to engage with different industry stakeholders and look at how to address some of the challenges.

He admitted that the application process was hit by technical glitches and teething problems on their administrative side since it was a new territory for them. Mthethwa further explained that the relief fund was R20,000 maximum.

“It means that if you feel you lost R4m, we won’t have that amount. Again, this does not mean that if you had asked for R5,000 or R10,000, you will voluntarily get R20,000. You will get what you have asked for as long as it does not go beyond R20,000.”
