The rock was the fifth-largest piece of the moon on earth and anyone with money could buy it immediately. “There aren’t even a handful of larger lunar meteorites: this is the fifth largest known. Nothing brought back by the Apollo Missions is as large,” “It is really an incredible opportunity to acquire a world class specimen from the moon,” James Hyslop, Christie’s Head of Science and Natural History said.

A file photo of an asteroid entering the earth. Christie’s said the rock was probably knocked off the moon’s surface by a collision with an asteroid or a comet and it had to travel at least 239,000 miles through space before falling to earth in a fiery meteor shower. About 30 meteorites from the shower were found in Northwest Africa and Christie’s was also offering for private sale a group of 13 aesthetic iron meteorites.

Hyslop said he was lucky to have to handle a few lunar meteorites at Christie’s over the years. “I’ve been lucky enough to handle a few lunar meteorites at Christie’s over the years, but every time I see this specimen in the warehouse the sheer size of it bowls me over. Weighing over 13.5kg, it is so much larger than anything else that has ever been offered before.

The experience of holding a piece of another world in your hands is something you never forget.”

SA’s Covid-19 death toll stood at 131 on Sunday night.

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa reached 6783 on Sunday and the death toll has risen to 131.

This means another eight deaths were confirmed on Sunday – two in the Western Cape, two in Gauteng and four in the Eastern Cape.

Man, 51, from Bloemfontein is the sixth in Free State to die of Covid-19

The sixth person in the Free State to die of Covid-19 on May 1 was a 51-year-old male patient from Freedom Square in Bloemfontein.

NEWS

The number of confirmed cases increased from 6336 on Saturday to 6783 on Sunday – up by 447 cases in one day. But this seemingly high number stems from more than 15 061 new tests that were conducted, out of the 245 747 that had been done to date.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said the Western Cape still had the highest number of infections with 3044 confirmed cases, followed by Gauteng with 1624 cases and KwaZulu-Natal with 1076 cases. The other provinces’ numbers are: 774 in Eastern Cape, 122 in Free State, 37 in Limpopo, 46 in Mpumalanga, 36 in North West and 24 in the Northern Cape.

More than 7.2m South Africans have been screened and more than 72 000 were referred for testing.

Dear Cyril, We are not your naughty children … and Gareth Cliff also jumps in

Radio and television personality Gareth Cliff.

Mike Abel, co-founder and CEO of the M&C Saatchi Group of companies operating in Africa, has taken to Facebook to pen an open letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa and several ministers.

He is not the only one to have done so – media personality Gareth Cliff’s message to the government has also gained a lot of traction on social media.

Both Cliff and Abel make similar arguments, saying South Africans heeded the initial call for a lockdown — and also accepted another two weeks of hard lockdown. But now the regulations for level four seem unreasonable and the impact on the economy daunting.

“Our patience and emotional state of affairs are on a knife-edge,” writes Cliff on social media site Facebook.

He ends his letter with the words: “When Moses told Pharaoh to let his people go, Pharaoh didn’t listen and there were plagues. We all know how that story went for Pharaoh. You have to start letting our people go Mr President, or this plague will be the least of our worries. Even Moses could tell you that.”

Abel also pointed out that South Africans had heeded Ramaphosa’s call for five weeks of lockdown life.

“This lockdown had only one purpose. To keep people at home whilst our health services prepared for an onslaught of what this virus may bring in terms of illness and death …”

But now he has started to question whether the health department did in fact use this time to prepare for the worst, and he questioned the reasoning behind the regulations of level four of the lockdown.

South Africans were not being shown any respect for supporting the initial lockdown.

“And yet here we find ourselves, somehow being treated like naughty children and yourselves being our self-appointed parents. You have determined what we can and can’t buy, you have threatened taking us back to level 5 if we don’t behave and you have overreached in terms of your controls.”

Abel said the government needed to use this time to rebuild trust in the ruling ANC.

“Through listening to the citizenry and understanding realities. Through keeping an open mind. Through being approachable and caring.

“We are not your naughty children. In fact, quite the reverse. It is us who have paid our taxes and tried our level best to keep the wheels of our country turning over the years the Zupta forces tried to loot it blind. It is you who have to regain our trust – not vice versa.”

Cliff calls on Ramaphosa to “let his people go”.

Pregnant woman among four killed in Ogies crash.

Days after government relaxed the coronavirus lockdown travel restrictions, road fatalities were on the rise.

On Sunday, four people died when their broken down vehicle was hit by a truck on the N12 near Ogies.

“It’s believed the car had broken down on the N12 when the truck slammed into the back of the vehicle,” said ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks.

Among the deceased was a pregnant woman. Two people were reported to be in critical conditions.

“ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found a truck off to the side of the road with the car a few metres in front with extensive damage to the vehicle and the occupants strewn across the road,” said Banks.

“Three adults and three children were in the car at the time of the accident. Two children had unfortunately already succumbed to their injuries and were declared deceased on scene,” he said.

The remaining four passengers were found to be in a critical condition.

“They had suffered poly trauma injuries and needed advanced life support intervention. All patients were transported to the provincial hospital for further medical care,” said Banks.

The pregnant woman, however, did not make it to hospital. She was certified dead on arrival.

“The child passed away in hospital shortly after arriving in the trauma unit,” Banks said.

On the same stretch of road, about 35km away, another truck accident occurred.

This time, a truck carrying ammonia crashed into another truck, leading to a gas spillage across the highway which cuts through Tasbet Park, a residential suburb in Witbank.

The gas spillage forced mass evacuations to be carried out shortly after midnight on Monday morning.

Four people were hospitalised after inhaling the toxic fumes. No fatalities were reported.

A traffic officer scans a taxi for signs of any violation of lockdown laws at the N1 roadblock at the Carousel Toll Paza.

On a chilly Friday night near the Carousel Toll Plaza, north of Pretoria, a contingent of about 100 police and traffic officers, nurses and SA National Defence Force medics are hard at work at a major roadblock.

Red and blue emergency lights are flashing along a stretch of the N1 beyond the toll plaza, to intensify the battle against the spread of coronavirus infections.

It’s the first day of the seven-day grace period in which travelling between provinces is permitted for nonessential work in over a month.

For some drivers on the road it’s time to panic, start rolling down the windows and fumble as nurses armed with flashlights, surgical masks and gloves point a thermometer gun at their foreheads.

Traffic volumes were unexpectedly low at the usually busy toll plaza. At around 8.30pm, Tibane Manganye was pulled over and taken for screening at a mobile clinic run by a nurse and an SANDF medic.

Workers fear for safety as they return

Some economic activities resume today.

News

A nervous Manganye listened intently as officers asked questions about his travel.

“Do you know what time is it?” asked one traffic officer.

Manganye said he was not aware of the curfew imposed from May 1, prohibiting the movement of people between 8pm and 5am.

“I wasn’t listening to the radio and I haven’t watched the news today because I have been driving,” he said.

The 36-year-old was one of thousands of people who were stuck in different provinces due to the restrictions of lockdown level 5 on interprovincial travel. Now South Africans have been given a seven-day window to travel beyond provincial borders during level 4 of the lockdown.

Sister Jenny Maluleke from the department of health screens motorist Jerry Ngoepe, who was travelling from Limpopo, at a roadblock.

The roadblock where Manganye was pulled over is one of many that are expected to be set up at the entry points of Gauteng where screening is done and compliance checked.

Manganye and his family had travelled to Limpopo on March 26, the day the lockdown was enforced. He works in Gauteng at Security Management Services and said his annual leave was booked prior to the countrywide lockdown.

“My wife needs to return to work. Her boss called her that she must come back because the lockdown has been relaxed and that we could travel back,” he added.

Standing about a metre away from Manganye, Jenny Maluleke, a nurse from Pretoria West Hospital, fired screening questions.

“Have you left the country over the past month? Are you experiencing a fever? Are you experiencing nausea, coughing, sore throat, or weakness?

“We went to Limpopo because we wanted to spend time with family … I thought it would be safer for my family,” Manganye said.

Maluleke had screened hundreds of travelling motorists on the day, but she was yet to refer anyone for testing.

Malema says ‘Gareth Cliff must speed up the process … so they can learn a lifetime lesson’

By: illovuonline news team

Many have been losing patience with restrictive lockdown laws, while a letter from the radio host appears to have captured the mood – much to the disapproval of others.

In a tweet on Sunday, EFF leader Julius Malema revisited a long-running allegation that President Cyril Ramaphosa was “deployed” to become president by “investors”, and he appeared to suggest that people breaking lockdown regulations would find there would be heavy a price to pay for it – in fact to “learn a lifetime lesson”.

South Africans, like many other citizens worldwide, have grown frustrated by more than five weeks of living in lockdown, with numerous scenes over the long weekend capturing crowds of people walking, going to shops and joining long food queues with little social distancing in place.

The EFF has been very outspoken about the supposed need to keep heavy lockdown restrictions in place in the apparent hope that the virus can be kept at bay for months or years to come.

The government has, however, said it is unlikely that it will be possible over the medium to long term to prevent the infection rate peaking.

The party has joined many in condemning people being “willing to disobey lockdown regulations”.

In a reasonably threatening comment Malema said: “Let them try, Gareth Cliff must speed up the process so that they can learn a lifetime lesson very fast.”

Malema was referring to an open letter penned by online radio host Gareth Cliff, who has interviewed Malema at his studios in the past.

Cliff’s letter and associated voice note have gone viral, evidently capturing the sentiments of many people. In it he said: “Our patience and emotional state of affairs are on a knife-edge. We are losing hope.”

He cautioned that “regulations not only have to make sense, but also have to have significant buy-in from the public – otherwise people will break them, in big ways and small. South Africans are mostly compliant – but when you promise something and then break that promise, it makes us feel like we should break your regulations in return.”

He added: “Many of us aren’t afraid of the virus anymore. It’s our health and we’ll take our chances, thank you. We ARE afraid of the havoc your lockdown is wreaking on the economy, on people’s lives and livelihoods.

“I see fewer and fewer explanations from ministers and more and more capricious, some would say spiteful, regulation.”

Despite not being a smoker himself, he said the continued ban on tobacco products would simply create unnecessary anger.

“There are more of us than there are police officers and soldiers, so if you piss enough people off, things get very hairy. I’m sure those advisers in the security cluster have mentioned that they can’t shoot us all or put us all in jail.”

Cliff rather threateningly ended with a biblical reference: “When Moses told Pharaoh to let his people go, Pharaoh didn’t listen and there were plagues. We all know how that story went for Pharaoh. You have to start letting our people go Mr President, or this plague will be the least of our worries. Even Moses could tell you that.”

Mangcobo And Nkunzi’s Job On The Line As Uzalo Bans Kissing

Mzansi’s most-watched soapie with over 10,3 million viewers, Uzalo, is set to resume production minus all kissing scenes. This comes after producers of the show decided to cut all scenes that involve kissing and intimacy. Uzalo bans kissing and intimacy on set.

Viewers of the popular show will have to kiss all kissing scenes goodbyes Uzalo banned kissing, touching and any physical contact from their favourite actors.

Insiders with the latest know-how on the going on of the show said writers were forced to alter the scenes and do a lot of rewriting after the decision for Uzalo to ban kissing was announced. The decision was made as part of the show’s attempt to curb the spread of Covid-19. The insider said the altered storyline had a big impact on Uzalo’s episodes.

“Most of these Uzalo actors will suffer and still don’t know what the future holds because of these drastic changes. The producers and writers have had to focus on the plots within the storyline that don’t involve couples in order to practice the social distancing rule.

The insider said the future of popular onscreen couples such as Sbusiso and Fikile, played by Simphiwe Majozi and Nelisa Mchunu-Nomcebo and Qhabanga, played by Nombulelo Mhlongo and Syabonga Shibe, are still not known since the scripts had been changed.

Said the insider, ” There is no episode in Uzalo that passes by without these couples appearing in bed together or hugging. They’re regarded as onscreen powerful and popular couples. Things are going to take another turn. It’s turf and they will only find out what is going to happen about their storylines tomorrow.”

Uzalo’s main characters, Mangcobo and Nkunzi will fell the full effect of the kissing ban as they have recently moved in together on screen.

“Uzalo actors are scared of losing their jobs. They don’t know what tomorrow holds. Social distancing makes it hard for producers and writers, which cause a lot of stress and uncertainty for actors”, said the source.

The move was confirmed by Baby Cele, who plays Gabisile in Uzalo. ” Writers had to change the script. We thank them for a job well done.”

Israeli Hospital to begin treating coronavirus Patients with Cannabis

By: illovuonline news team

An Israeli hospital will begin testing COVID-19 patients with medicinal cannabis, which is known to have anti-viral properties, as part of a new experimental treatment.

Researchers are investigating cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive component of cannabis also known as CBD, can slow down the spread of the virus and stop moderate patients from turning critical.

Dozens of COVID-19 patients in moderate condition at Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv are expected to be treated.

Barak Cohen, a senior anesthesiologist who is in charge of managing the hospital’s coronavirus response, stressed the treatment would alleviate symptoms by using “a component of the cannabis plant that is considered safe and non-addictive.”

Separately, researchers at Tel Aviv University have begun developing a CBD-based drug that has been shown to be effective against inflammation for coronavirus-infected lung cells.

The Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa is also working to develop two complementary drugs based on various cannabis strains to fight the virus. The first will attempt to reduce the patient’s immune response while the second aims to slow down the course of the disease by lowering the expression of the receptor, a protein that allows the virus to receive and release substances outside of the cell.

“Our lab has been approved to operate as a coronavirus lab, and we are currently promoting two studies based on existing cannabis studies,” Prof. Dudi Meiri, who is leading the Technion’s team, told Calcalist.

“First, we will try to identify the plant’s immune cells that are capable of suppressing the immune response to the coronavirus, which causes inflammation and disease. Cannabis plant molecules have the ability to lower the immune system response without suppressing it entirely, thereby providing better complementary treatment than steroids, which completely suppress the immune system.”

The second study Meiri will be conducted on the receptor which allows the virus to inject its genetic expression into human cells and proliferate.

“There is a process that examines the effect of cannabis molecules on proteins as well,” he explained. “We are now examining which ones are relevant to the same receptor, with the goal of lowering its expression, making it difficult for the virus to enter the cell and proliferate.”
