The need is massive,’ say donors as 3km Centurion food queue shocks SA

Residents of Mooiplaas informal settlement outside Centurion gathered to collect food hampers. UK politician Peter Hain commented that the queue was ‘outside the richest city in the richest country in Africa’.
Residents of Mooiplaas and Spruit informal settlements in Centurion, north of Johannesburg, came out in numbers to collect food hampers on Wednesday, forming a queue 3km long.
While 8,000 food hampers were handed out, this is just a drop in the ocean, said social activist Yusuf Abramjee.
โThe need for food is massive. More than 80% of this community are foreigners and they have not received any help from government. We are happy we made a small difference,โ he said.
The initiative was made possible by the Tshwane Muslim Community and the Sutherland Ridge, Ikon Park and Westhills business communities.

Nearly 1,000 schools vandalised since start of lockdown, food stolen

Basic education minister Angie Motshekga has expressed deep concern that 962 schools had been vandalised since the start of the lockdown.
โIn almost all the incidents, administration blocks and laboratories have been targeted, and ICT equipment has been stolen,โ Motshekga said at a media briefing on Thursday.
She said provinces also reported that food, meant for the school nutrition programme, had been stolen.
โThe Umlazi District in KwaZulu-Natal is the hardest hit, with 41 schools affected. This is shocking and disturbing,โ Motshekga said.
Motshekga welcomed the work done by the police in arresting the suspects, some of whom were found in possession of the items believed to have been stolen from the schools.
โThe barbaric acts of vandalism, must be condemned by all of us.
โWe cannot afford a situation where the education of our children is further compromised by criminals, over and above what the coronavirus has brought upon us.โ
Motshekga also appealed to the public to work with the police, to ensure that the culprits responsible for the incidents of vandalism, theft and burglaries of schools were apprehended, convicted and jailed for long periods.

Sophie Ndaba as head nurse Palesa in prison drama Lockdown.
It took Sophie Ndaba going from glamour to grit on screen to get rid of Queen Moroka, a process that led Ndaba to get her groove back.
Ndaba completely disappears into the image of her demented character Palesa in prison drama Lockdown currently airing on Mzansi Magic.
With a deep scar on her face, minimal makeup and no fancy hair, Ndaba’s appearance in the show is spine-chilling – and that is the point.
Her dramatic physical make-under reminds me of my favourite line from the biopic Rocketman in which Reginald Dwight transforms into his stage name Elton John: “You gotta kill the person you were born to be to become the person you want to be.”
In order to evolve into a new era it was vital that Ndaba killed the image of Queen Moroka – the fabulous, off-kilter and dolled-up character that made her showbiz royalty for 28 years.
Ndaba says the many years of being typecast as comic relief and not being offered roles that showcase her acting range were the lowest of her illustrious career. “[My lowest career moment] was not being able to play roles I have wanted to play and not being given a chance to play because everyone saw Queen. Producers and writers could not see me play anything else. It was sad.”
Ndaba not only undergoes a physical transformation playing the deranged head nurse working at a mental institution. But she shows off her dramatic acting chops and the result has been emotionally poignant for viewers and naysayers who have praised her performance.
“Queen was ‘darling this and that’. Palesa is on another level and she has history,” she says. “Palesa represents a lot of broken women in SA. It’s an authentic role – a role worth playing. Most women are scarred inside and for Palesa she has both the inside and outside scars. The scar on her face makes her very uncomfortable, vulnerable and less confident.
One unforgettable scene is in episode 2 when she looks at herself in the mirror – removing her wig and makeup – as she wails in shame.
“It took me time and I literally requested the floor crew to give me a moment in silence.
“I had to find her pain; the director allowed that moment and after I dug deep she came out.”
Ndaba knows pain well, especially in the past two years as she has been a victim of social media bullying.
She endured public humiliation after her sudden weight loss as a result of type 2 diabetes. But being the formidable figure that she is, Ndaba has emerged stronger than ever.
“Oh gosh, talking about cyber bullying is not nice and it will never be because these are my fellow South African sisters and brothers out there,” Ndaba says.
“It really broke my heart when they didn’t understand what I was going through. I was dealing with so many things ranging from acceptance, stress and depression.
“Then we added SA to my list of attackers. Oh Lord, I just couldn’t believe it. What happened to ubuntu nje? Kicking a horse when it’s down and you’re supposed to be a sister or brother.
“Being in the public eye is one thing. People thinking they own you enough to say whatever and get away with it – it was deep.”
But the support of her family that includes her businessman husband Max Lichaba got her through it.
“I have a family to fight for. My kids are amazing. They took care of me in my lowest moments – prayed and fasted for me.
“My young step kids, the hugs and love they give to me it’s heavenly. I’m blessed to be called mom by 12 kids.
“Motherhood is worth every hour and minute. During Covid-19 at home I have bonded more with them.”
In November, Ndaba and Lichaba celebrated their second wedding anniversary.
“Married life is hectic. It’s a project that one must never be too comfortable with and forget to work on it each day.
“As a career-driven couple with kids you have your family and yourselves to think of. But it’s a blessing never to be taken for granted. I love marriage. I’m working on it as best as I can.”
Ndaba’s first taste of fame came as a young model from Soweto in TV show Class of ’92. Before long she was cast in Generations and went on to score other acting gigs. “. I remembered how in our Soweto family home I was a pregnant teenager and asked my late mother Joyce to trust me with her pension money – and that I would multiply it and be their breadwinner. It was amazing that she took in my daughter. I knocked on agencies doors and I made her proud.”

No contact teaching at universities โ but department launches ambitious online plan
By: illovuonline news team

Higher education minister Blade Nzimande.
The presidentโs national command council on Covid-19 has opted not to resume contact learning for the 2020 higher education academic year during level 4 of the lockdown.
The higher education and training department will, instead, embark on an ambitious plan to distribute learning devices and facilitate partnerships with data service providers to provide for some semblance of online learning.
The only exception will be students in their final year of clinical training โ medical students in the main โ who can learn under strict conditions so that they can plug into governmentโs fight against Covid-19.
Minister Blade Nzimande said that regular campus activity posed a risk to the health of students.
โThe risks of a return to normal campus-based activity for thousands of students and staff are simply too great and cannot function successfully outside of the national context of a general lockdown. Universities and Technical Vocational Education & Training (TVET) colleges do not operate in a vacuum, but in a historically specific context,โ Nzimande said.
โAgainst this background and with the endorsement by the national command council, we have decided that the current period, from May 1 until SA transitions into a lower Covid-19 risk phase, must be used to put a number of critical interventions in place across the PSET [post-school education and training] system.
โThis includes, developing and implementing effective multimodal remote learning systems (digital, analogue and physical delivery of learning materials) to provide a reasonable level of academic support to all our students at all institutions to resume academic learning and teaching support.
โAs we are in an unprecedented emergency, we have to use all available tools to reach our students, fully cognisant that it will not substitute the need for contact learning when conditions permit. This we will do making sure that no student or institution is left behind.โ
Nsfas students โ about 730,000 in total โ will all be provided with laptops, but government is still without a plan for those who are yet to be allocated funding or form part of the โmissing middleโ. This refers to a bracket of students who, according to a means test, are too wealthy for NSFAS but whose families do not earn enough to secure bank loans.
Nzimande said he has begun looking into partnerships with banks to provide loans for those students at the beginning of the academic year. He said the engagements were ongoing. In the interim he recommended students look for loans from banks and said the department would also go and โbeg from good Samaritansโ.
The minister also conceded that it would be difficult to find a supplier that could supply hundreds of thousands of laptops in one go, meaning that they would have to be distributed in phases.
While some frustrated students are being asked to fork out for rent at month-end despite the lockdown, landlord Pumla Mgidi has taken a different …
NEWS
On the matter of connectivity, the department would work with network providers to provide data to students. It would also be assisted by the Centre for Industrial and Scientific Research to map out network stability in different districts.
โThe department, assisted by the CSIR, is working on developing a geospatial model to map the levels and quality of connectivity, bandwidth and distribution of learning and co-learning centres in various districts throughout SA, including municipal and other private facilities that might be used by students during this period.
โIn addition, CSIR is modelling the โcarrying capacityโ of our universities and Technical Vocational Education & Training (TVET) colleges in the scenario where it would be safe to return certain groups of students, and within the national command council Covid-19 regulatory parameters. I have indeed mobilised both my departments to support these efforts.โ
