Protesting Eastern Cape inmates burnt their uniforms on Tuesday night, demanding to be taken to court and given cigarettes.
Frustrated inmates at the awaiting-trial section at St Albans prison in Port Elizabeth set fire to parts of the building on Tuesday evening.
The prisoners claimed they were fed up with overcrowding, having to sleep on bathroom floors and an alleged lack of provisions to protect them against Covid-19.
Correctional services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said the offenders burnt their uniforms, demanded to be taken to court and to be given cigarettes.

Why it’s important to have a healthy relationship with your device during lockdown

Too much time staring at a screen can cause digital eye strain – previously known as computer vision syndrome.
Blurred vision, difficulty changing focus, eye fatigue and redness of the eyes? You’re probably spending too much time staring at a screen during the lockdown.
University of KwaZulu-Natal optometry lecturer Dr Alvin Munsamy said too much time staring at a screen could cause digital eye strain, previously known as computer vision syndrome.
“If you consider that a computer is not the only electronic device we use today, then digital eye strain is a better description as it encompasses all electronic devices with LED displays.
“Light from LED screens emit high energy visible blue light similar to sunlight, except not as strong, and this was also thought to cause digital eye strain. The light in a working environment can cause discomfort glare,” he said.
Neck and shoulder pain were other symptoms of computer vision syndrome.
Munsamy suggested using the 20:20:20 rule to avoid the condition.
“Every 20 minutes look away about 20 feet (6m) for 20 seconds. The ideal distance between the eyes and the screen is between 50cm and 70cm.”
“Remember to blink every four seconds and ensure you are using spectacles prescribed by your optometrist. Consider wearing spectacles with blue-blocking coatings and/or anti-reflection coatings and use artificial tear supplements which can be obtained over the counter at a pharmacy,” he said.
Your screen should be at eye level, with the gaze slightly depressed about 15 to 20 degrees.
Munsamy warned that continuous screen use caused eye strain, so it was important to take regular breaks.
“In the case of mobile phones, be cautious, as they have smaller font sizes and are used at a closer working distance. Screen time reduces blink rate and also causes poor blink quality resulting in dry eyes.
“Do not spend long, continuous periods at the screen of an electronic device,” Munsamy warned. “We must use these devices as part of our new norm, so maintaining proper visual hygiene will ensure a healthy ‘relationship’ with them,” he added.

Access to the Union Buildings in Pretoria has been restricted after a member of the presidency staff tested positive for Covid-19.
An “essential staff” member within the presidency has tested positive for Covid-19.
The presidency made the announcement on Wednesday, saying that public and staff access to the Union Buildings had been limited in the wake of the diagnosis.
“In line with government’s guidelines on the management of Covid-19 cases, steps have been taken to secure treatment of the relevant staff member and to provide support to the member’s family. Steps have also been taken to ensure that officials who have contact with the staff member are screened,” the statement read.

Public and staff access to the Union Buildings is currently limited following the confirmation that a staff member has tested positive for COVID-19.
All the presidency’s buildings have also been disinfected — a process that started on Tuesday.
“Access to the Union Buildings is therefore limited to exceptional interactions,” said the statement.
“The president and deputy president have been working remotely and not from the Union Buildings since the start of lockdown.
“The presidency wishes the affected colleague a speedy recovery.”

Getting to know Lester ( Luyanda Masondo)
Q & A
Luyanda Masondo
Instagram: @lester.sa
Q.1 If you didn’t become a musician, what would you be doing right now?
A. If I didn’t become a musician, I believe I’d certainly be applying more time into finding out where more of my interests lie in terms of what occupations I would like to be a part of.
Q. 2 What is the weirdest or funniest question, you’ve ever been asked in an interview?
A . “Who do you think is a better rapper than you?” That was a funny question to me because I am not a rapper, I’m an artist.
Q.3 What do you feel is the best song?
A . The best song I’ve ever released is undoubtedly the song titled “Run Back”. This, to me, is the best song I’ve ever released because it speaks to the heart of everyone living on Earth as we’ve all got our separate challenges including the biggest challenge we’ve ever encountered (Covid-19).
Q. 4 Which musician would you like to collaborate with next?
A . Since I am still an underground artist, there are many artists I still wish to collaborate with within South Africa, keeping it local with any artist that is willing to collaborate. But in all honesty the only artist on my mind for a genuinely desired feature is actually Drake.
Q.5 If you can have your fans remember one thing about you, what would it be?
A . The way I’d like my fans to remember is certainly by my lyricism.
Q. 6 *A random funny question, such as* If you could be a fruit, which one would you be and Why? Or on a scale of 1 to 9401,how good is your new single compared to your last one
A . Certainly 9041!! My new single “No Remorse” definitely shows no mercy.
Q.7 What got you Into music?
7. A friend I had back in grade 4 saw my potential when we used to freestyle in school during breaks. I had already been influenced by musicians such as 2pac and J. Cole but once I started actually writing rhymes at the back of my school books, my interests grew deeper with the years.
Q.8 If you could date any other musician ( or celebrity) who would it be and why?
A . Right now that would be ShaSha. She’s got a such a genuine heart and we can learn a lot about people through social media nowadays and from what I’ve seen and heard over the time I’ve known about her intrigues my soul.
Q.9 Do you think you could get any better as a musician? And if so, how would you achieve that?
A . Certainly. There’s always room from improvement. Understanding what other musicians have to go through before they perform, what they have to do in order to write good music and what they have to do before the record in the studio. Getting tips from other artists can also help me increase my knowledge regarding this industry.
Q. 10 If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
A . “Never give up on your dreams. In my dreams you guys are always supporting me, and I’m confident in saying you make my dreams come true.”

Coronavirus: Tanzanian president promises to import Madagascar’s ‘cure’
By: illovuonline news team

caption, It was launched after being tested on fewer than 20 people
The president of Tanzania, John Magufuli, is sending a plane to Madagascar to fetch a herbal tonic touted as a cure for Covid-19 even as the World Health Organization (WHO) warned there was no proof of any cure.
Congo-Brazzaville’s president has also promised to import the drink.
It is produced from the artemisia plant – the source of an ingredient used in a malaria treatment.
The WHO also advised people against self-medicating.
Coronavirus: Caution urged over Madagascar’s ‘herbal cure’
Live Tracker: Coronavirus in Africa
The drink was launched as Covid-Organics and was being marketed after being tested on fewer than 20 people over a period of three weeks, the Tanzanian president’s chief of staff Lova Hasinirina Ranoromaro told the BBC.
In response to the launch of Covid-Organics, the WHO said in a statement sent to the BBC that the global organisation did not recommend “self-medication with any medicines… as a prevention or cure for Covid-19”.
It reiterated earlier comments by WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus that there were “no short-cuts” to finding effective mediation to fight coronarvirus.
International trials were under way to find an effective treatment, the WHO added.
In March, the US-based National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health warned against purported coronavirus remedies, including herbal therapies and teas – saying the best way to prevent infection was to avoid exposure to the virus.
A SIMP
The drink has been picked up in other African countries.
On Saturday Madagascar delivered a shipment to Guinea-Bissau.
The Malagasy president also tweeted that the special envoy to Equatorial Guinea picked up a shipment of the drink.
Speaking on TV, President Magufuli said he was already in contact with the government of Madagascar and would despatch an aircraft to the island nation to collect the medicine.
“I am communicating with Madagascar, and they have already written a letter saying they have discovered some medicine. We will despatch a flight to bring the medicine so that Tanzanians can also benefit. So as the government we are working day and night,” he said.
Mr Magufuli has already been widely criticised for his reaction to the coronavirus pandemic.
He has encouraged the public to continue gathering in places of worship, while much of the world has faced lockdown.
Tanzania’s delay in enforcing stricter measures to prevent further spread of coronavirus in the country could have led to the spike in positive cases, according to the WHO.
The country has 480 confirmed cases of coronavirus but Mr Magufuli said that number may be exaggerated and that he doubted the credibility of the national laboratory.
He said that he had secretly had some animals and fruits tested at the laboratory and that a papaya (paw-paw), a quail and a goat returned positive samples.
“That means there is possibility for technical errors or these imported reagents have issues,” he said, without giving more detail.
