Uzalo, the most-watched telenovela in South Africa, will be going off the screen from the 11 of May 2020 until 15 June 2020. The show has currently run out of episodes to air due to the forced production break which came with level 5 lockdown.

Though Uzalo is currently shooting new episodes, the behind the scenes processes, make it impossible to make up for a lost time. Also, to add to their woes, they are having to rewrite their scripts to exclude all scenes which included kissing or close contact among actors.

Uzalo goes off air

“No intimacy will be permitted in performance. Where possible, the number of cast members participating in a scene will be limited,” Uzalo head of public relations Nomfundo Zondi said.

Taking to Twitter, an official press release was issued which read:

Uzalo production officially resumed on Wednesday 06 May 2020. However, Uzalo will be off air from Monday 11 May 2020. This is due to the national lockdown aimed at combating the global Covid-19 pandemic. Production was profoundly impacted by this as it directly resulted in the show not have enough material to flight. It is important to us to ensure we deliver content that adheres to the Covid-19 protocols, safeguarding our cast, crew and the greater community. Stay tuned Mzansi’s most-watched show will return to screens on Monday, 15 June 2020 with exciting storylines and captivating twists”.

The SABC also confirmed the news and released a statement on the next steps to be taken.

“The SABC can confirm that due to the production of SABC1’s popular series Uzalo being halted as a result of the lockdown, unfortunately, there is limited stock for this particular programme,” SABC acting spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo said.

Nearly 200,000 could die from COVID-19 in Africa: WHO

Over 40 million may become infected in first year of outbreak if containment measures fail, says World Health Organization

Tens of thousands of people in Africa may die from the novel coronavirus if effective measures against the pandemic are not taken by authorities, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa said Thursday.

In a statement, the WHO said 83,000-190,000 people on the continent could die from the virus.

It also underlined that 29 million to 44 million could become infected in the first year of the pandemic if containment measures fail.

The organization said its research, which is based on prediction modelling, looks at 47 countries in the WHO African Region with a total population of one billion.

It said smaller African countries alongside Algeria, South Africa and Cameroon were at high risk if containment measures are not prioritized.

The statement said it is predicted that the number of cases that would require hospitalization would overwhelm the available medical capacity in much of Africa.

“There would be an estimated 3.6 million–5.5 million COVID-19 hospitalizations, of which 82, 000–167,000 would be severe cases requiring oxygen and 52,000–107,000 would be critical cases requiring breathing support,” it said.

It stressed that such a huge number of patients in hospitals would severely strain the health capacities of countries.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Africa has reached 51,698, according to data released Thursday by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

KZN’s poor starve as food hampers sold, stolen by officials

By: illovuonline news team

Durban – Despite many allegations of the “politicisation” and looting of food hampers in KwaZulu-Natal, the Department of Social Development remains adamant that only councillors can provide an authentic report of needy people in the province.

However, Durban community activist Mary de Haas and head of Gift of the Givers Imtiaz Sooliman warned that using councillors to distribute food hampers “was the worse thing” and “not working in most areas”.

Chairperson of Ubunye Bamahostela, Vusi Zweni, said they represented more than 350 000 hostel dwellers, who were “starving”.

He claimed food parcels from councillors only reached friends and those affiliated with their political party.

During a portfolio committee meeting yesterday, KZN Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza conceded they had received several complaints about the looting of food hampers meant for the poor and that councillors were politicising or benefiting financially from its distribution.

However, she said there had been no formal incident report opened.

She said councillors needed to be held accountable by the speakers from the various municipalities, who enforced the code of conduct.

“We cannot move away from the fact that councillors have been elected by communities. It is therefore the councillors responsibility to provide us with an authentic report of who needs food parcels in their community,” she said.

To date the department had spent an estimated R7 million on the distribution of food parcels in KZN.

Acting head at the department of social development, Sbu Ngubane, said the demand for food parcels had increased excessively in recent weeks and they were working around the clock to ensure delivery was quick.

According to a report submitted by the department to the portfolio committee, efforts to distribute the food hampers in the province was being done jointly with the SA Social Security Agency, the Action Development Agency and municipalities.

The report said a nerve centre had also been created at local, district and provincial levels to co-ordinate and monitor the application process and distribution of food parcels.

“There are some places where we are experiencing challenges but we are pushing very hard to ensure that all the districts work hard to meet the demand,” said Ngubane.

De Haas said the department needed to come up with a strategy of doing follow-ups to ensure that food parcels were actually received by communities.

She said that a lack of tracing and accounting by the department had seen councillors taking advantage of the situation.

“There must be a list that will be monitored and audited by the department. In that way, they would make sure that every food parcel that’s issued out is accounted for. The recipient must sign on the list and add their contact details,” said De Haas.

She added government needs to ensure accountability from councillors as people were near starvation in many areas.

“A man from a local hostel told me yesterday (Wednesday), that all he had for the day was four dry slices of bread given to him by the neighbour. In all districts in KZN, people are not happy. Some councillors want to do good but you find that there is not enough food parcels for everyone,” she said.

She said that many NPOs and NGOs in the provinces are running out of resources while councillors are not meeting them halfway.

Sooliman said that using councillors was the worse thing and was not working in most areas.

He said while there were good councillors, others were using this opportunity as a means to put themselves forward ahead of the upcoming local government election.

“The political leadership has a responsibility to ensure that the population is taken care of. Right now, the population is in a mess. Communities are hungry, vulnerable and don’t have jobs. This is a very stressful situation psychologically and emotionally,” said Sooliman.

“Government officials and councillors are getting salaries and they should do their job properly,” he added.

Kind-hearted grandmother stuck with no money for food after relative steals her pension

Cape Town – A Manenberg grandmother has been left destitute after a homeless relative whom she gave shelter to allegedly stole her Sassa card and withdrew her R2110 pension.

Daphne Adams, 67, was left disappointed and hungry since Monday after she was stuck with no money for food or electricity.

Forced

The heartbroken woman says she was forced to ration dry bread between herself and her eight-year-old grandson, Ziyaad Jacobs.

Daphne says just over a year ago, her 46-year-old nephew, her brother’s son, came to her for help after being released from jail.

“He came out of jail and nobody wanted to help him and he was sleeping on the street and under bridges. I felt sorry for him and let him live here while he looks for work,” she says.

She says on Sunday night, she prepared her clothes and put her Sassa card in a small purse as she planned to walk to Nyanga Junction to withdraw her money.

“He was up early and said he needed to go to someplace to look for work and needed taxi fare,” the granny says.

“I told him I can’t use my pension to give him money for taxi fare because I must budget.

“But then when I went to fetch my purse, I got a skrik when I saw my card was gone.”

The woman, who suffers from diabetes, says after Ziyaad’s mother died, she became his legal guardian and is counting her cents so that she can pay his school fees and other expenses.

She says her nephew has now disappeared without a trace.

Daphne says the man knew her Sassa card PIN as he’d gone with her before to withdraw money and she now fears he stole her money.

Because she doesn’t have taxi fare to get to the Sassa office in Athlone to block her card, she’s been going to the Manenberg police station for help.

Over the past three days, the elderly woman has walked more than 12km, back and forth to the cop shop.

“But they just told me if I didn’t see him I can’t open a case,” she says.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana says the grandmother should report the matter to the station commander.

But a crying Daphne says: “My legs are sore, I can’t walk so far again.

“I am just trying to get to Sassa to block my card and I am stressed because so far we had one stukkie bread each day just so I can take my tablets.

“Today I couldn’t even take my tablets.”

The grandmother added: “If he didn’t take the card, why is he missing? I don’t know how I will survive.”

South Africa is introducing a new driver’s licence – what you need to know

By: illovuonline news team
09-05-2020

The Department of Transport plans to introduce updated driver’s licence cards within the next two years.

Presenting in a parliamentary committee meeting on Wednesday (6 May), the department said that the Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA) – a trading entity of the Department of Transport which is responsible for card production – officially took over the card production facility in 2015.

When this took place, the group discovered that the country’s card machines had not been upgraded since 1998 and that the live capture units (LCUs) also needed an upgrade.

“The DLCA embarked on a journey to modernise the card production environment which involved the replacement of the LCUs with LEUs (Live Enrollment Units) and the introduction of a new driving licence card,” it said.

However, it said that the security of the card design was compromised when the laptop of a DLCA official was stolen.

The Department of Transport said that the plan for the introduction for a new driver’s licence card has since been resuscitated and it is envisaged that a new durable driving licence card will be introduced by the end of 2021/22.

This card will boast improved security features and will be ‘ISO 18013 compliant’ – meaning it will be internationally accepted.

The Department of Transport said that the modernisation of the DLCA will also allow for a number of other improvements, including:

Reducing the production turnaround from 12 days to 7 days;

Introducing an electronic/mobile driving licence;

Creating a platform for introducing e-services;

Re-engineering of the DLCA process to allow for automation of support services and the elimination of the manual process.

Impact of the lockdown

The department confirmed that the coronavirus lockdown has had an impact on the introduction of these new cards, but did not indicate how the project was delayed.

It added that the DLCA is losing revenue of around R19 million month due to the reduction of licence applications during the lockdown period.

The Department of Transport also predicts that the country will face a card backlog once the lockdown has lifted and motorists are allowed to apply for licences.

This is due to a ‘possible sharp increase’ in the driver’s licence cards applications as well as routine maintenance on card production machines, it said.

A woman identified as Emily Doucet has expressed her displeasure over Facebook’s action on her pet’s account – The 33-year-old woman from the United States says she was denied access to her dog’s Facebook account –

She was told to present a valid driver’s licence before the profile could be accessible.

A 33-year-old woman from the United States identified as Emily Doucet has cried out after she was denied access to her dog’s Facebook account and told to present a valid driver’s licence for the pet.

Emily said she created the account for her pet named Max in 2010 and recently tried to log in to update his last name to her married name. She, however, could not remember the password and was eventually locked out. Emily said: “I’m not sure how it happened, but I so rarely use the account that I honestly wasn’t too surprised.”

She said since she was notified by Facebook that she had to verify Max’s account by providing a government-issued ID or driver’s license to access the account, she had no choice but to teach him how to drive.

When illovuonline News reached Facebook on the issue, a rep for the social media company said Facebook does not “allow people to maintain profiles for their pets”. According to the rep, Facebook encourages users to create a Page for their beloved animals.

Ruchika Budhraja, a spokesperson for Facebook, said: “Profiles are meant to represent people, and we ask that people set up Pages if they want to represent a brand, business, group, organization – or pet.”

Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile, opens up on secret plots “against daddy”

– Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Dudu Zuma-Sambudla, revealed some damning information against the African National Congress (ANC)

– According to her, the former president has been the victim of secret plots and betrayals against him

– Dudu singled out ANC veteran Reverend Frank Chikane, as she opened up about her mother’s death

Former President Jacob Zuma is a polarising figure to say the least. While uBaba enjoys loyal support in certain quarters, others view him as a corrupt thief.

However, according to his daughter, Dudu Zuma-Sambudla, he has been the victim of covet plots to slander his name.

Zuma-Sambudla launched a verbal tirade against the ANC and singled out ANC veteran Reverend Frank Chikane when she revealed some details linked to her mother taking her own life 20 years ago.

Zuma and his son, Duduzane, have been engaging in Zoom video sessions which have been shared via social media.

In a recent Zoom chat, Duduzane claims that he and Chikane were involved in a tug-of-war over his mother’s note at the time of her passing. Chikane allegedly got away with the letter and Duduzane hasn’t seen it since.

Zuma-Sambudla shared some details of the day her mother passed on and spoke of Chikane’s presence at their home.

According to reports at the time, the note allegedly called for Zuma to be banned from attending her funeral, which sparked controversy.

Chikane took to Twitter and stated he opted to refrain from commenting on the Zuma’s allegations out of respect for the late Kate Mantsho Zuma.

He concluded by saying, “Comrade Jacob Zuma should take responsibility to correct his son because he knows the truth. I hope he has done so, or will still do it!”

However, illovuonline gathered that Zuma-Sambudla was having none of it, as she lashed out at Chikane and other party members.

Zuma-Sambudla accused the ANC of trying to “bury” Zuma in court and also believes the media and general public are targeting the family.

Previously, illovuonline reported that Duduzane opened up about his mother’s death and how the media came into possession of a note she had left.

He also spoke about David Mabuza, whose life he helped save after he had been poisoned.

Covid-19 updates: Parol for 19 000 prisoners, DA rejects lockdown

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that nearly 19 000 prisoners will be paroled in a bid to limit the spread of Covid-19 in SA jails. Illovuonline explores this story and other top updates.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the release of nearly 19 000 prisoners and the DA has rebelled against the continued lockdown.

Illovuonline provides a summary of the latest events as the nation endures the Covid-19 pandemic. 1. Covid-19: Western Cape experiences 11 deaths, 87 total fatalities Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has painted a grim portrait of the situation in his province on Friday.

Winde confirmed that the province has recorded 11 new Covid-19 victims, with the death toll climbing to 87. Amongst the deceased is Ntombizakithi Ngidi, a nurse at Tygerberg Hospital explained Winde. “This is the second nurse we have lost to Covid-19 in the province, following the death last week of Petronella Benjamin, who was one day away from her retirement.” 2. Covid-19: Ramaphosa allows nearly 19 000 prisoners to go on parole President Cyril Ramaphosa has allowed certain prisoners to be placed on parole as part of the efforts to combat Covid-19.

In a statement issued by the presidency on Friday, it was explained that reducing the number of prisoners in the system could help limit infections. “The President has taken this step in response to a call by the United Nations to all countries to reduce prison populations so that social distancing and self-isolation conditions can be observed during this period. In South Africa, as in many other countries, correctional facilities have witnessed outbreaks of coronavirus infections among inmates and personnel.” 3. Covid-19: Steenhuisen slams lockdown, calls for it to be lifted Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen has called for the current Covid-19 national lockdown to end. The opposition leader says he is withdrawing support of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s lockdown and levied criticism against it instead.

“The real tragedy playing out here is no longer the coronavirus, but the lockdown itself because this lockdown is going to cost many more lives than it can possibly save.” Steenhuisen insists that there is simply nothing to be gained by keeping the current plan of action. “This is a hard truth to speak and it is even harder to hear. But it must be spoken. We have to end the lockdown crisis, and we have to do it now.

There is very little for us to gain and almost everything to lose by keeping people at home and keeping businesses shut any longer.”
