Scientists Find The First Animal That Doesn’t Need Oxygen to Survive

Some truths about the Universe and our experience in it seem immutable. The sky is up. Gravity sucks. Nothing can travel faster than light. Multicellular life needs oxygen to live. Except we might need to rethink that last one.

Earlier this year, scientists discovered that a jellyfish-like parasite doesn’t have a mitochondrial genome – the first multicellular organism known to have this absence. That means it doesn’t breathe; in fact, it lives its life completely free of oxygen dependency.

This discovery isn’t just changing our understanding of how life can work here on Earth – it could also have implications for the search for extraterrestrial life.

Life started to develop the ability to metabolise oxygen – that is, respirate – sometime over 1.45 billion years ago. A larger archaeon engulfed a smaller bacterium, and somehow the bacterium’s new home was beneficial to both parties, and the two stayed together.

That symbiotic relationship resulted in the two organisms evolving together, and eventually those bacteria ensconced within became organelles called mitochondria. Every cell in your body except red blood cells has large numbers of mitochondria, and these are essential for the respiration process.

They break down oxygen to produce a molecule called adenosine triphosphate, which multicellular organisms use to power cellular processes.

We know there are adaptations that allow some organisms to thrive in low-oxygen, or hypoxic, conditions. Some single-celled organisms have evolvedmitochondria-related organelles for anaerobic metabolism; but the possibility of exclusively anaerobic multicellular organisms has been the subject of some scientific debate.

That is, until a team of researchers led by Dayana Yahalomi of Tel Aviv University in Israel decided to take another look at a common salmon parasite called Henneguya salminicola.

It’s a cnidarian, belonging to the same phylum as corals, jellyfish and anemones. Although the cysts it creates in the fish’s flesh are unsightly, the parasites are not harmful, and will live with the salmon for its entire life cycle.

Tucked away inside its host, the tiny cnidarian can survive quite hypoxic conditions. But exactly how it does so is difficult to know without looking at the creature’s DNA – so that’s what the researchers did.

They used deep sequencing and fluorescence microscopy to conduct a close study of H. salminicola, and found that it has lost its mitochondrial genome. In addition, it’s also lost the capacity for aerobic respiration, and almost all of the nuclear genes involved in transcribing and replicating mitochondria.

Like the single-celled organisms, it had evolved mitochondria-related organelles, but these are unusual too – they have folds in the inner membrane not usually seen.

The same sequencing and microscopic methods in a closely related cnidarian fish parasite, Myxobolus squamalis, was used as a control, and clearly showed a mitochondrial genome.

These results show that here, at last, is a multicellular organism that doesn’t need oxygen to survive.

Exactly how it survives is still something of a mystery. It could be leeching adenosine triphosphate from its host, but that’s yet to be determined.

But the loss is pretty consistent with an overall trend in these creatures – one of genetic simplification. Over many, many years, they have basically devolved from a free-living jellyfish ancestor into the much more simple parasite we see today.

They’ve lost most of the original jellyfish genome, but retaining – oddly – a complex structure resembling jellyfish stinging cells. They don’t use these to sting, but to cling to their hosts: an evolutionary adaptation from the free-living jellyfish’s needs to the parasite’s. You can see them in the image above – they’re the things that look like eyes.

The discovery could help fisheries adapt their strategies for dealing with the parasite; although it’s harmless to humans, no one wants to buy salmon riddled with tiny weird jellyfish.

But it’s also a heck of a discovery for helping us to understand how life works.

“Our discovery confirms that adaptation to an anaerobic environment is not unique to single-celled eukaryotes, but has also evolved in a multicellular, parasitic animal,” the researchers wrote in their paper, published in February 2020.

“Hence, H. salminicola provides an opportunity for understanding the evolutionary transition from an aerobic to an exclusive anaerobic metabolism.”

Government is holding back Covid-19 data to avoid panic – report

By: illovuonline news team

The government says it is holding back some information on the Covid-19 pandemic, to avoid panic.

Illovuonline news reported that the government’s strategy to keep crucial data from the public comes after an earlier model on which the country’s strict lockdown laws was heavily criticised.

Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize said Saturday (9 May), that there are now 9,420 confirmed cases of coronavirus in South Africa.

This is an increase of 525 from the 8,895 cases reported on Friday, with infections having jumped by 663 cases over the prior 24-hour period.

Dr Mkhize said that the total number of deaths has increased by eight, to 186.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Khusela Diko said “We don’t want to put these models out to the public as if they are the gospel truth.

“There is an element where we want to avoid panic in communities, and we’re also mindful of the stigma of the virus.”

Experts noted that the government’s decisions on reopening the economy are based on information and data that is not available to the public.

The data will include epidemiological models drawn up by leading scientists, actuaries and mathematicians tracking how effective the lockdown has been, the Sunday paper said.

Opposition

Opposition party, the Democratic Alliance DA has demanded the minutes of all discussions held by the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) on the coronavirus.

DA leader, John Steenhuisen, said the party has filed an application in terms of the Promotion to Access to Information (PAIA) Act to access the ‘classified’ records.

Steenhuisen said that the lockdown in its current form is ‘destructive’, which has turned South Africans into “subjects of an authoritarian state”.

“Level 4 of the lockdown, as it turns out, is hardly different from Level 5. In fact, in many respects it is more restrictive, not less,” Steenhuisen said.

“This wasn’t progress towards a more open society and economy at all. It was simply an extension of the hard lockdown – this time with no final deadline in sight.”

Economic importance

Economists and private sector have warned of the devastating effects that a continued lockdown will have on the country’s economy and employment.

If level 4 continues for a month, with a gradual move to lower levels, the economy will contract 14.5% in 2020.

A swift move to level 2 would reduce the contraction to 10% and cut the number of formal sector jobs at risk from 2 million to less than half that.

At level 2, 97% of the workforce is allowed to work.

Business for SA (B4SA) has stated that quickly moving South Africa to a level 2 lockdown will save over one million jobs, while still allowing people to keep safe and follow Covid-19 health protocols.

A Sunday Times report on B4SA’s statement said the group is in constant talks with the government on allowing people to go back to work.

It noted that companies and employees can take responsibility for “implementing stringent health and safety controls” when returning to their places of work.

The current lockdown approach, which has been at level 5 and level 4, “is economically impractical and hard to regulate”, it said.

“This could have dire socioeconomic and health consequences.”

Under level 4, many businesses are prevented from opening. As a result, employees are sitting at home without pay – waiting for UIF contributions to help them pay the bills.

China to reform disease prevention system after Covid-19 exposes weaknesses

A member of a medical team weeps at the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport after travel restrictions to leave Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province and China’s epicentre of the Covid-19 outbreak, were lifted, on April 8 2020.

China will reform its disease prevention and control system to address weaknesses exposed by the coronavirus outbreak, a senior health official said on Saturday.

China has been criticised domestically and abroad as being initially slow to react to the epidemic, which first broke out on a large scale in Wuhan. The virus has since spread across the world, infecting almost 4-million people and killing almost a quarter-million from the Covid-19 disease it causes.

“This coronavirus epidemic is a big test of our country’s governance and governing ability, and it exposed the weak links in how we address major epidemic and public health systems,” Li Bin, vice minister of the China National Health Commission, told reporters.

The commission intends to build a “centralised and efficient” chain of command and reform, and modernise the disease prevention and control system, he said.

The commission also aims to make better use of big data, artificial intelligence and cloud computing to better analyse the disease, trace the virus and distribute resources.

He said the commission plans to step up research on core technology, improve medical insurance and better ensure the availability of emergency materials.

China has not seen any new deaths from coronavirus for 24 days.

St Augustine’s hospital in Durban was closed following an outbreak of Covid-19 last month. The hospital group has confirmed that it will reopen their doors on Monday

Embattled St Augustine’s hospital in Durban and Kingsway hospital in Amanzimtoti are set to reopen their doors on Monday after outbreaks of Covid-19 at the hospital last month.

Health minister Zweli Mkhize ordered a probe into St Augustine’s hospital — one of the largest private facilities in the country after it emerged that 66 people had tested positive — including 45 health-care workers — and six people died.

The hospital was closed on April 8. A week later, Kingsway hospital was closed after it emerged that several health-care workers and patients had tested positive.

Both hospitals were the subject of a probe by the provincial department of health amid allegations by health-care workers of not receiving proper safety gear.

In a statement on Saturday, Netcare regional director coastal Craig Murphy said that the KwaZulu-Natal department of health (KZN DoH) advised on Friday that both Netcare St Augustine’s and Netcare Kingsway hospitals may reopen.

“Since Netcare St Augustine’s and Netcare Kingsway hospitals were closed for new patient admissions in April, Netcare has been engaging and working closely, and on an ongoing basis, with the KZN DoH on all matters pertaining to Covid-19 at the hospitals as well as planning for their reopening,” Murphy said.

“Preparations for both the hospitals to reopen on Monday are currently under way. Last week, the hospitals had already further enhanced their disinfecting and decontaminating programmes of all the facilities on their premises. Doctors at Netcare St Augustine’s and Netcare Kingsway hospitals will also again be consulting from their rooms as from Monday.

“We are pleased that Netcare St Augustine’s and Netcare Kingsway hospitals can again offer much needed specialised medical care to the communities they serve, and we sincerely thank the communities for their patience and understanding over the past number of weeks.”

The reopening comes amid frustration by more than 100 medical specialists who have consulting rooms at St Augustine’s. The doctors said they were frustrated at not being able to provide “much needed
medical care to patients.

Meanwhile, the provincial department of health wouldn’t comment to TimesLIVE on the status of the investigation into the hospital.

Netcare, who hired independent specialists to assist with the investigation, said they were also not aware of the current status of the investigation.

Murphy said: “The independent investigation by infectious diseases specialists and epidemiologists commenced some time ago. We have not received their final report. Discussing or releasing the findings of the independent investigation falls within the ambit of the department.”

Another KZN hospital closes as 19 test positive for Covid-19, including two babies

A hospital in Stanger, north of Durban, has closed its doors to new patients after 19 people tested positive for Covid-19.

Fredie Blom enjoys a cigarette as he celebrates his 116th birthday at his home in Delft, near Cape Town, on May 8, 2020. According to ‘Oupa’ (grandfather) Fredie and his identity card, he was born in 1904, making him one of the oldest men in the world.

Fredie Blom celebrated his 116th birthday on Friday unfazed by the coronavirus crisis, over 100 years since the Spanish flu pandemic killed his sister.

“I have lived this long because of God’s grace,” said Blom, possibly one of the oldest men in the world.

Lighting a cigarette, he recalled the 1918 pandemic that left tens of millions dead worldwide including his sister.

Blom was born in 1904 in the rural town of Adelaide, tucked near the Great Winterberg mountain range of South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.

He is older than a 112-year old British resident named the world’s oldest living man by the Guinness World Records in March. Blom’s age has not yet been verified by the body.

Eight suspects were arrested for illegal mining by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) in Limpopo on Thursday after being caught processing gold.

Police also seized equipment and material believed to be worth millions of rand.

The suspects, aged between 31 and 65, were due to appear in the Giyani magistrate’s court on Friday for contravening the Precious Metal Act.

They are alleged to have been mining illegally in Hlaneki, Mapuve and Mavalani villages, just outside Giyani.

“The Hawks, the SAPS Public Order Police, Tactical Response Team, National Intervention unit, Local Criminal Record Centre, Explosives Unit, Crime Intelligence, Air Wing, K9, SANDF, department of home affairs, department of mineral resources & energy, department of water & sanitation conducted simultaneous disruptive operations focusing on illegal mining at the three villages, where the integrated team confiscated a generator, hose pipes, saws, electric cables, hammers, 9mm live ammunition, gold nuggets, bags full of gold bearing material, pendukas, grinder and an app gas.

“The confiscated goods are yet to be valued but they are expected to run into millions. The suspects were found processing gold when they were apprehended,” Limpopo police said.

Limpopo DPCI provincial head Maj-Gen Thobeka Jozi welcomed the arrests and assured the public that police would continue to intensify operations to “decisively deal with illegal mining which is contributing to serious and violent crime in the province”.

Sperm containing virus raises small risk of COVID-19 spread via sex -study

Chinese researchers found there is a small chance Covid-19 could be transmitted sexually.

Chinese researchers who tested sperm of men infected with COVID-19 found that a minority of them had the new coronavirus in their semen, opening up a small chance the disease could be transmitted sexually, scientists said on Thursday.

A study by doctors at China’s Shangqiu Municipal Hospital of 38 men hospitalised with the disease found that six of them, or 16%, tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in their semen.

The researchers said that while the findings were preliminary and based on only a small number of infected men, more research is needed to see whether sexual transmission might play a role in the spreading COVID-19 pandemic.

“Further studies are required with respect to the detailed information about virus shedding, survival time and concentration in semen,” the team wrote in a study published in JAMA Network Open.

“If it could be proved that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted sexually … (that) might be a critical part of the prevention,” they said, “especially considering the fact that SARS-CoV-2 was detected in the semen of recovering patients.”

Independent experts said the findings were interesting but should be viewed with caution and in the context of other small studies that have not found the new coronavirus in sperm.

A previous small study of 12 COVID-19 patients in China in February and March found that all of them tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 in semen samples.

Allan Pacey, a professor of andrology at Britain’s Sheffield University, said the studies should not be seen as conclusive, since there were some technical difficulties in testing semen for viruses. He said the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in sperm did not show whether it is active and capable of causing infection.

“However, we should not be surprised if the virus which causes COVID-19 is found in the semen of some men, since this has been shown with many other viruses such as Ebola and Zika,” he said.

Sheena Lewis, a professor of reproductive medicine at Queen’s University Belfast, stressed that this was a “very small study” and said its findings were in keeping with other small studies showing low or no SARS-CoV-2 in tests of semen samples.

“However, the long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 on male reproduction are not yet known,” she said.
