Coronavirus doctor’s diary: The patient who married hours before dying

Dr John Wright relates two love stories from the Covid wards of Bradford Royal Infirmary – one about a patient marrying his fiancee hours before he died, the other about a nurse’s tough decision to live apart from her four-year-old boy as long as the pandemic continues.

This is a time of such heightened emotions – of fear and loneliness, but also of extraordinary love.

When newly qualified staff nurse Sophie Bryant-Miles arrived for a night shift on Ward One recently, she was told that a young man with a number of medical problems as well as suspected Covid-19 was not expected to survive, and was now receiving palliative care.

But also there – dressed in full PPE with gloves, apron, mask and visor – was his fiancรฉe of at least 15 years, who told staff that they had never had the time or money to marry. Life had kept getting in the way.

It was a heart-wrenching collision between love and death, but out of it came a very beautiful thing. Sophie called hospital chaplain Joe Fielder, and asked him if he could marry the couple straight away.

Joe said he couldn’t do a legally binding service but he could come and do a service that was like a wedding. They’d still say their “I do”. They’d have the whole “til death do us part” and all the things that they’d have at a wedding, except in hospital. Joe came, and we made tin foil rings for them, and we got the patient’s daughter on FaceTime so that she could watch as well.

It was just a really lovely service, and Joe was brilliant – he made brochures with the names on and all the hymns and the prayers that we were saying, everything.

The fiancee was completely understanding of the fact that we all had to be fully gowned up for it and that he [the patient] would have to wear a face mask. They were still amazingly excited about what was happening.

Joe was in the full gear, bless him, as well. He looked like he was sweating.

We did a little photograph shoot for them afterwards. Because that’s what she wanted, and that’s what he wanted. We tried to make it as much like a real wedding as we could, and then we gave them some cake too.

She’d been made very aware that he was in the last hours of his life, and I think this was the last thing that they felt they could do together. At least they’ve got this final memory together.

The medical advice was that he wasn’t going to survive the night, so I used a service and a celebration of commitments which had lots of similarities with a church wedding service.

The patient did his best to say the words but struggled at times because of his breathing. His partner did her best to say the words but struggled at times because of tears, and the family were smiling and crying at the same time.

And all this was done in PPE equipment, it was very surreal. But that patient could die knowing that he had said those words of commitment, and his family would know that he died having done that. And his partner – she was really grateful. She’s very grateful for the opportunity to have those words said.

You just want to do your bit to treat people with dignity, to help them know that they are loved and cared for. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to help them celebrate their love and mark it in that way.

It’s too early for the wife and daughter to comment – the funeral hasn’t even taken place yet – but they have given their consent for this account to be published.

The ward manager, Jennie Marshall-Hamad, found out about the service when she woke the following morning. It was a bittersweet feeling. She felt overwhelmed and proud of her team – and a great sense of sadness when the patient passed away hours later.

Chinese doctors wake up from Covid-19 comas with dark skin

Two doctors who fought at the frontline before contracting Covid-19, identified as Yi Fan and Hu Weifeng, spent close to three months confined to hospital beds –

They slipped into comas shortly after being infected and were on life support machines to keep keep them alive – When they woke up, their skin looked darker than usual and doctors suspected it was caused by hormonal imbalances and liver damage.

The world is mulling over a case of two Chinese doctors who went into comas due to Covid-19 complications and woke up with darker skin tones.

The two doctors, Yi Fan and Hu Weifeng, reportedly suffered liver damage that in turn affected the pigmentation of their skin. According to a Beijing TV station, the 42-year-old medical officers suffered from hormonal imbalances that came as a result of their damaged livers.

Dr Yi was hooked on life support machines for 39 days. The two doctors were diagnosed with the virus in January and spent 99 days confined to hospital beds. Yi and his colleague worked with the whistleblower who succumbed to the disease in February.

Hu and Yi underwent extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for 45 and 39 gruelling days respectively. The treatment process saved their lives. ECMO is a treatment that circulates and oxygenates blood outside a patient’s body before pumping it back to the bloodstream of an ill person.

The two who were hooked to life support machines for months were first treated at Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital before being transferred to Tongji Hospital.

Doctors suspect the colour change was caused by a drug and hormonal imbalance.

Before contracting the virus, the two worked with whistleblower Li Wenliang who notified the world about the virus that was sweeping through China before cases of Covid-19 were officially reported.

Yi said he felt like his health had taken a positive turn though he struggled to walk around. The doctor disclosed he was able to move around in bed and felt a bit stronger.

However, fighting Covid-19 left him traumatised and gave him scary nightmares. “When I first gained consciousness, especially after I got to know about my condition, I felt scared. I had nightmares often,” the 42-year-old said.

One of the doctors who treated the patients said a drug they had taken while unconscious could also be the cause of their sudden change in skin colour. Hu took time to regain his ability to speak but was in high spirits.

Babes Wodumo trends, English bundle depleted while speaking to cop

Singer Babes Wodumo has been trending on social media for the wrong reasons again – The Wololo hitmaker’s “English bundle” got “depleted” while speaking to a police officer through what appears to be the gate of her home, where she and some other people were working –

South Africans have reacted differently to what happened to the star; some laughed at her while others defended her.

Babes Wodumo found herself battling with the English language just as she was trying to explain to a police officer that she was working. He had approached her while conducting inspections with regard to lockdown regulations.

A video of a woman, believed to the Wololo hitmaker, has been trending on social media since it first emerged at the weekend. She speaks to the police officer through the gate but as she tries to explain to him that a number of people were working inside, as “it’s our living”, her ‘English bundle’ runs out.

She then admits that English has failed her. The video has gone viral and Mzansi peeps are divided over what happened to Babes.

Some people have been trolling her while others are defending her.

@LTlomatsana wrote: “And then English decided to isolate itself from Babes Wodumo.”

@SikoMartinM said: “Donโ€™t disrespect Papa Penny by comparing him with Babes Wodumo. That man finishes a whole English sentence and remains undefeated, Babes runs away.”

@Rori_DeepSoul commented: “Mina I donโ€™t blame Babes Wodumo. I blame her Grade 11 English teacher, Mr Mohale Motaung-Mhlongo.”

Babes’ fans defended her. The Goddess commented:

“Don’t act smart la we all know that English bundles get depleted when we get mad. So I don’t blame Babes Wodumo.”

@Thamsanqa18 said: “Babes Wodumo doesn’t owe anyone good English. English is not a measure of intelligence. White people abuse our African languages too.”

@adam_RVP added: “Even those who didn’t do that well in English at school are laughing at Babes Wodumo.” On the topic of English as an additional language, illovuonline news team has reported that South Africans are the best in English language proficiency in Africa, according to the latest report by a global private language tutor, Education First (EF).

Mzansi was ranked number six in the world among the countries that were studied.

Linas Beliลซnas in a viral post on Monday, April 13, shared a romantic picture of a couple who are health workers –

The doctors held written notes which said that though they ought to be getting married, they had to cancel plans for their office calls – The sacrifice of the couple is one of several others who have had to forsake their personal interests.

While it may be an overstated fact that health workers are making extra efforts to ensure people’s safety during coronavirus pandemic, the individual sacrifices they make may not be getting the needed attention.

Linas Beliลซnas, a fintech expert, shared the photo of a couple on his LinkedIn on Monday, April 13, to show how they placed people’s needs over theirs.

The said couple who were supposed to be married dumped their plans for that and resumed work to attend to the increasing number of coronavirus cases.

In a romantic photoshoot, the couple kissed and held cardboards that read: “We should be getting married today but instead we went to work for you. So, stay at home for us.” The picture of the couple in their hospital uniform as they went back to work.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte outlined a five-point plan for managing the coronavirus epidemic on Tuesday.

Addressing Italy’s House of representatives, Conte said that the plan will focus on:

Continued social distancing with use of masks and gloves until a vaccine or a therapy is available.

Reinforcing the health care system, and paying special attention to care homes to “avoid another out-of-control explosion of contagion.”

Creating special Covid-19 hospitals designated to cater exclusively to coronavirus patients.

Conducting antibody testing in a large study to determine the spread of the virus among the population. Conte said 300,000 serological tests have been requested.

Contact tracing. Last week the government officially chose a contract tracing app, called Immuni, which is in the testing phase, but the choice to download it will be voluntary, Conte said.

Haibo: Emtee shows no love to Drake’s latest hit, says it’s ‘trash’

Emtee does not like Drake’s new hit titled Toosie Slide – The rapper took to social media to share with his fans that he thinks the “joint” is “trash” – The song hit a billion views on TikTok in just two days.

Rapper Emtee is known for spilling his feelings on social media. The Johustleburg hitmaker is notorious for being big on twars. He is renowned for not mincing his words when he feels some type of way about you, regardless of how famous you are.

Many Mzansi rappers have been involved in twars instigated by Emtee. This time around, Emtee decided to play with the big boys and take his twars overseas.

He has dissed international superstar Drake’s new song titled Toosie Slide. It’s reported that Toosie Slide is Drakeโ€™s third single to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also hit a billion views on TikTok in just two days, making it the fastest song to hit a billion on the app.

But Emtee feels that the track doesn’t deserve all the hype it’s getting. He tweeted: “Dat Toosie Slide joint trash.”

Most social media users who saw the tweet disagreed with Emtee.

@NankuWld commented: “At least keep such nonsense to yourself bro.”

@KRithuri1999 said: “What if Drake wants to have a feature with you and he sees a post like this..? Youโ€™re blocking your own blessings.”

@bogosi_boikanyo wrote: “I love your music and artistry, but now you tripping.”

@LZDesigns_za commented: “For an artist that is still finding his feet to talk like this is bad. Specially about another man’s hustle. You are an artist don’t be what you are not by stepping on anyone’s toes. Be careful of how you step back to the top.”

A handful of Emtee’s fans agreed with him.

@moLOOKS commented: “I agree. It’s trash!”

@Sbusiso77942690 wrote: “Pure trash.”

Idris Elba: We should quarantine a week per year to remember Covid-19

Actor Idris Elba has made a call for some of the changes that the world should implement once the Covid-19 pandemic is over –

According to Elba, the world should go into a week-long quarantine each year – Elba says this will help the world remember the severity of events in 2020.

Celebrated Hollywood actor Idris Elba has made a call for some of the changes that should be made across the world once the coronavirus pandemic is over.

According to reports , the actor, who is famous for his roles in Hollywood action-packed movies, has recently recovered after he tested positive for the virus along with his wife, Sabrine Elba.

The report noted that now that the celebrity couple has moved past the worst part of the virus, Elba described the ordeal as “definitely scary and unsettling and nervous”.

In addition to this, Elba submitted that a week should be dedicated to quarantine in a bid to recognise the global pandemic that claimed many lives. Metro reports that Idris in a chat with Associated Press said: “You know, everyoneโ€™s sort of feeling the way we have been feeling, but it has definitely been sort of just a complete upheaval.

โ€˜I think that the world should take a week of quarantine every year just to remember this time. Remember each other. I really do.โ€ “I think itโ€™sโ€ฆ other species use it. Itโ€™s called hibernation. But it does remind you that the world doesnโ€™t tick on your time,” Elba added.

Meet the SA entrepreneurs who created new Covid-19 testing kits

A couple of South African entrepreneurs have come up with a new coronavirus testing kit – The kit will allow health officials to see results in just 65 minutes –

Not only with their invention speed up the testing time, it will also allow the country to reduce the time it takes for test kits to arrive as they are usually imported.

Meet Daniel Ndima and Dineo Lioma – two local entrepreneurs who have come up with a new way to test for the coronavirus. According to Tech Financials, the pair are Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellows and heads of CapeBio, a biotechnology company based in Centurion, Gauteng.

Testing is important in the fight against the coronavirus and Ndima and Lioma stepped up to create a new, more effective way to test South Africans. They developed the qPCR kit – which has been dubbed a “breakthrough” in testing for Covid-19.

The tests take only 65 minutes to determine whether or not a person has been infected with Covid-19. Their product will not only help speed up the testing process, it will also reduce South Africa’s reliance on foreign imports. Ndima said: โ€œOne of our major challenges is our reliance on imported tests.

Most countries are currently experiencing issues with supply and demand, which their respective governments are controlling with newly introduced trade regulations.

This has caused delays in the delivery of imported testing kits and protective gear, and may impact on the delivery of vaccines once they have passed clinical trials.โ€

Ndima is a scientist with a special interest in structural biology, the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation wrote. Lioma obtained a master’s degree in micro and nanotechnology enterprise from Cambridge University in the UK. She graduated with distinctions.

Now, Ndima and Lioma are working together to further medical science in South Africa. Their company, CapeBio, has built an impressive reputation in its field with a variety of reliable tests.

Right now they are awaiting validation from the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority before they can introduce the products onto the Mzansi market – including private and public pathology labs.
