“It’s up to you” Italian told as lockdown end nears

Scientists in Italy will closely be monitoring the virus contagion rate as the lockdown lifts.

Italy’s emergency response commissioner Domenico Arcuri begged Italians on Saturday not to lower their guards as the country prepares to ease the world’s longest coronavirus lockdown.

“On Monday, Phase Two begins. We have to be aware that it will be the start of an even bigger challenge,” Arcuri said.

After a two-month shut down to combat a virus that has killed over 28,000 people, Italians will be allowed to stroll in parks and visit relatives. Restaurants can open for takeout and wholesale stores can resume business.

Scientists will be closely monitoring the virus contagion rate as the lockdown lifts and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has said it may be reintroduced in locally if the numbers begin to rise significantly again.

Arcuri confirmed the “relative freedom” Italians were about to win could be taken away again for health reasons.

“We must maintain social distancing, maximum hygiene levels, and masks. We’ve done our bit to the best of our ability. From Monday, it’s up to you,” he said at a press conference.

“I implore you, do not lower your guards.”

Some 150,000 people will have their blood tested next week for the new coronavirus as authorities attempt to get a clearer picture of its spread as the lockdown eases. Those tests were expected to begin Monday.

Arcuri said the government had also bought over five million swabs to be distributed to the regions.

Masks costing just 50 cents due to a cap set by the government would go on sale in 50,000 shops, from pharmacies to tobacconists, starting Monday. That figure would rise to 100,000 shops by mid month.

Italy would be producing four million masks a day by mid June, 25 million by mid July and 35 million by mid August, Arcuri said.

Chaos erupt as food parcels handed out in Olievenhoutbosch

Residents offer their services to cart food parcels for a small fee on 2 May 2020 in Olievenhoutbosch in Centurion, north of Johannesburg. Residents came out in their thousands to receive food parcels.

The dissemination of false information has been blamed for the chaos that erupted on Saturday morning in Olievenhoutbosch, Centurion, where a foundation was distributing food parcels.

Senior pastor at 3C church Bert Pretorius, whose church together with the Mahlasedi Foundation are distributing food parcels in Olievenhoutbosch, told illovuonline news that someone spread false information that Saturday was the last day that food parcels would be distributed.

โ€œWe donโ€™t know who did this and why they did it. It could be a 15-year-old bored at home and spread the false information to people in this community,โ€ he said.

Pretorius said they had been distributing food parcels since Wednesday and until now had had no issues.

โ€œThe information that today was the last day caused panic among people who were expecting food parcels,โ€ he said.

A soldier ensures residents observe physical distancing on 2 May 2020 in Olievenhoutbosch in Centurion, north of Johannesburg. Residents came out in their thousands to receive food parcels.

According to Pretorius, more than 20,000 people gathered at the school in Olievenhoutbosch where his church together with a foundation were distributing food parcels to the community.

He also said also contributing to the chaos on Saturday was the arrival of people from other communities outside Olievenhoutbosch, who were not eligible to receive the food parcels.

He dismissed suggestions that there was a stampede earlier but admitted that things had got out of control with people trying to force their way into the centre where the food parcels were being handed out.

However, volunteers had managed to restore calm.

Pretorious said they had distributed food to more than 3,000 families since Wednesday and that they had about 30,000 families on their database before the food drive began. He said the project was made possible by the Douw Steyn family trust and other private businesses.

When illovuonline news team visited the area on Saturday afternoon, things were calm with people divided into queues. Soldiers and police were also monitoring ensuring that people in the queues maintained physical distancing.

โ€œWe are giving priority to the elderly and pregnant women. They have their own queue and the other queues are divided by sections which people come from,โ€ Pretorius said.

Before entering the premises, recipients must show a bar coded tag and form of identification and their temperature is also checked,

Gauteng acting MEC for social development Panyaza Lesufi rushed to the area after news that a stampede had broken out. He commended the church and the foundation for the great work that they did.

One of the recipients, Patricia Sibiya from extension 19 in Olievenhoutbosch said she was very happy with the food parcels. The unemployed mother of two said she joined the 2km-long queue at 4am. She only received her food parcel just after 1pm but said it was worth the wait.

Two police officers were killed when they were hit by a suspected drunk driver at a Covid-19 roadblock on the R594 in the Free State on Friday night.

Police spokesperson Brig Vishnu Naidoo said the officers, stationed at Deneysville, had been inspecting a truck they had stopped when a bakkie ploughed through the roadblock.

โ€œA driver who was allegedly heavily under the influence of alcohol hit the policemen, despite them being attired in reflector jackets,โ€ he said.

The man was arrested at the scene and faces charges of culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as contravention of disaster management regulations, Naidoo added.

National police commissioner Gen Khehla Sitole sent his condolences to those survived by the policemen.

โ€œWe trust that the man responsible for their deaths, who is currently behind bars, will be served with a deserving punishment if convicted,โ€ he said.

Madagascar is using its own medicine to treat the coronavirus – So far, 92 of Madagascar’s 128 coronavirus patients have recovered, leaving 36 active cases and no death –

However, WHO has warned against the widespread use of untested remedies, saying there’s no proof of a cure for Covid-19.

The world is facing one of the toughest times ever as it continues to battle an invisible enemy, Covid-19. The virus has claimed over 200 000 lives since it first surfaced in Wuhan, China in December 2019.

According to the information on worldometers, over three million people have been infected by the virus as at Thursday, 30 April. Despite the rising deaths in countries across the world, it appears Madagascar is doing something right.

The country has recorded 128 coronavirus cases, and 92 out of that number have recovered, leaving 36 active cases. Also, no death has been recorded in the country. Madagascar is said to be using its own medicine to treat the virus.

President Andry Rajoelina launched the herbal tea, named Covid-Organics, on Monday, 20 April. President Rajoelina said: โ€œAll trials and tests have been conducted and its effectiveness in reducing the elimination of symptoms have been proven for the treatment of patients with COVID-19 in Madagascar.โ€

The herbal medicine developed by Malagasy Institute of Applied Research and branded Covid-Organics, contains Artemisia- a plant on the Island used in the fight against malaria.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said there is no proof of a cure for Covid-19, warning against the widespread use of untested remedies.

Police seized R700,000 in cash from the home of on alleged drug dealer.

KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested two men, including a controversial suspected drug kingpin, in an ongoing investigation into rival gang murders in Chatsworth, south of Durban.

In an operation with metro police on Thursday evening, a team from the provincial Organised Crime Unit raided the home of a 62-year-old male, who is well-known in the community, and seized almost R700,000 cash, gold and silver valued at R250,000, five cellphones and firearms.

“Police seized a rifle, shotgun, pistol and revolver at his home. Two of the firearms were licenced and were seized by investigators for further analysis,” said SA Police Service spokesperson Brig Jay Naicker.

A second man was arrested at a flat where police suspected drugs were being stored. The flat is located opposite the home where the first arrest was made.

“Police officers seized heroin, mandrax and ecstasy valued at more than R240,000 at the flat. A 30-year-old man was arrested at the second premises after he was found in possession of the drugs,” said Naicker

Provincial police commissioner Lit-Gen Khombinkosi Jula hailed the operation as a breakthrough in the investigation

โ€œThis operation was the result of intelligence gathered and implicating certain individuals to be behind attacks and counter-attacks that have been taking place. A search warrant was obtained to enable police to pounce on those implicated in our investigations,” said Jula.

โ€œWe have established a team within the Provincial Organised Crime Unit that is probing these cases. I wish to commend all the dedicated police officers who were involved in this latest operation. We will not allow drug dealers to operate with impunity in this province, and they will continue to feel the wrath of law enforcement.โ€

The two suspects are due to appear in the Chatsworth magistrate’s court soon on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and drugs respectively.

Good news-SA could move’swiftly’ to level 3 restrictions, parliament told

Trade and industry minister minister Ebrahim Patel said the country does not need to stay at level 4 for a specific number of weeks but can move rapidly to a lower level should risks be mitigated.

If SA avoided a “sharp increase” in Covid-19 infections, the country could very soon shift to level 3 restrictions.

This is according to parliament’s trade, industry and competition portfolio committee.

The committee – together with the select committee on trade and industry, economic development, small business, tourism, employment and labour – met on Friday.

“Should the country avoid a sharp increase in the levels of infections with the return to work of large numbers of workers and expanded testing and healthcare facilities, the economy could shift to level 3 as soon as possible,” the committee said in a statement.

It said trade and industry minister minister Ebrahim Patel told the committees the country “does not need to stay at level 4 for a specific number of weeks but can move rapidly to a lower level should risks be mitigated”.

What exactly does level 4 mean? Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to explain tonight

“The committees heard the initial return to work will be based on the national level, but will progressively be expanded to provincial and district level, enabling workplaces to adapt to the level of infections and healthcare readiness in localities,” the committee said in a statement.

Ebrahim acknowledged that the Covid-19 pandemic would impact SA’s economy because many companies closed under the level 5 full lockdown.

โ€œWork is still underway to establish the extent of the impact. We are keen to restart as many economic areas as possible,โ€ he told the committee.

The joint sitting also heard that the Competition Commission has received about 1,000 concerns and complaints. On top of this, about 1,700 complaints were raised with the National Consumer Commission.

Committee chair Duma Nkosi commended the “responsible and decisive manner” in how government was dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.

โ€œWe know the lives of our people come first, and we will be guided by this principle. At the same time, we recognise the difficulty in the balancing act of keeping our people safe and reopening the economy as these are interlinked,” said Nkosi.

No booze or smokes under level 4 restrictions

Alcohol and cigarettes will not be allowed under level 4 restrictions, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said on Wednesday night.

You can travel between provinces for the next 7 days, but only for work or to return home

There were 146 roadblocks around the country on Thursday as police enforced the rules of law during the Covid-19 lockdown.

South Africans can travel between provinces, but only if it is for work, and it has to be a once-off trip.

“You cannot move backwards and forwards. It is one-way,” transport department director-general said Alec Moemi on Friday.

He was speaking at a briefing after transport minister Fikile Mbalula outlined the new transport rules under level 4 of the country’s Covid-19 lockdown.

Mbalula said travel between provinces, metropolitan areas and districts would remain prohibited, but there would be concessions made for workers who “have to commute to and from work on a daily basis, attendance of funerals and transportation of mortal remains”.

Travel between provinces now allowed – but only for seven days, Dlamini-Zuma says

Cogta minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma on Wednesday announced regulations about the once-off movement of persons.

Mbalula said there was a “once-off special dispensation” for those who weren’t at their homes before the lockdown to return home

“Those people are now permitted to travel between May 1 and May 7 in line with the regulations.

“Long distance bus and taxi operators are allowed to undertake long distance travel during this window period. Full compliance with the 70% passenger capacity, wearing of masks by all passengers and sanitisation of vehicles at the completion of each journey is a mandatory requirement,” said Mbalula.

He warned against people taking advantage of the rules.

Mbalula said: “You are allowed from today until May 7 to rearrange your setup, not to visit friends and all of that. If you are a student, or a doctor, whatever that you are, and when the lockdown was announced you were caught up somewhere and you’ve been disciplined and adhering to the law – and you did not even attempt to travel at night, you have stayed true to the regulations – you are now allowed, as a law-abiding citizen, to go back to where you belong, to go back to work or whatever you were doing.”

Earlier in the day, SAPS spokesperson Brig Vish Naidoo said some people had complained that officers at roadblocks were turning them back.

โ€œWe are getting complaints. Itโ€™s the first day so we are likely to experience problems. The communication was sent to our members. The grey area was when they should start moving.

โ€œThere is no need for a permit. We apologise for the inconveniences,โ€ Naidoo told Radio 702.

Public transport now allowed from 5am to 7pm, says Fikile Mbalula

Transport minister relaxes travel restrictions under Level 4 lockdown, but it is compulsory for all drivers and passengers to wear face masks

Lately, actress Thuthuka Mthembu who plays the role Nonka, Njezaโ€™s sister on Mzansiโ€™s popular television soapie Uzalo which airs on SABC 1, is doing the most when it comes to looks and sense of fashion on social media. She is a beautiful young woman with a promising bright future as her current career can tell.

Not so sure if maybe itโ€™s the lockdown, but it seems she is a bit active on social media than before as in the past few days caused chaos in the streets after announcing to her fans and followers that she was giving free 5G data to any lucky winners.

Therefore, with such a vibe we would love to see her continue blessing us with amazing looks of herself by constantly posting because we canโ€™t get enough of her. Following her Instagram platform, illovuonline news came across these gorgeous looking snaps of her and she is really a hottie. Who knows maybe her love for Coca Cola, brings that spark on her.

You talk of beauty, cute skin, smile, body, etc, Miss Mthembu will most probably deserve the beauty crown for the year of 2020. There is this other post wearing an army bottom on which she wrote, โ€˜Donโ€™t be fooled. Cute soldiers fight just as hardโ€˜.

Actress Dawn Thandeka King is that one person who when she decides to dress to kill, surely leaves a lot of people shaking their heads in disbelief of what they will be seeing because she will be looking incredible. When you see her appearing on the television screens on shows like Lockdown and Uzalo you wouldnโ€™t think she can dress this well.

Following her social media posts, illovuonline news encountered some breathtaking pictures of Thandeka which are worth sharing, and truth be told, she really looked out of this world.

These fast food outlets will be delivering during Level 4 lockdown

One of the most consistent complaints I’ve heard during this 5-week level 5 lockdown, was takeaways. Or rather, the lack thereof.

The end is in sight! With level 4 we will now be able to soothe all those cravings for unhealthy fast food again.

Those cravings are real, manโ€ฆ Hereโ€™s a list of fast food joints that will operate under level 4 lockdown restrictions.

Fast food during level 4 lockdown: What we know

These fast food establishments will be delivering

Burger King

Burger King announced on Thursday that it would be opening select restaurants around the country and would be ready to deliver its full mean locally from Wednesday 6 May 2020.

Customers will also be able to order their favourite Burger King meals through Mr D Food and Uber Eats. Burger Kingโ€™s Group Marketing Executive, Ezelna Jones, assures that they will be adhering to government regulations:

โ€œIn line with global hygiene best practice, we will be ensuring that all managers on duty conduct regular wellness checks, including temperature taking for each team member before every shift. To ensure good personal hygiene habits, all Burger King team members are now required to wash hands every 30 minutes at a minimum, as per coronavirus (COVID-19) spread prevention guidelinesโ€.

KFC

KFC also got the everyone going with their announcement โ€“ which happens to feature the most delectable wraps and chicken weโ€™ve seen in a while. The team tweeted:

โ€œTake a much-needed break from lockdown pots and get your fav Original Recipe fried chicken via contactless delivery from this Saturday 2 May, you deserve it.โ€

KFCโ€™s dining area and Drive-Thruโ€™s will remain closed for now, and hungry customers will have to order for delivery from selected restaurants via Mr D Food, Uber Eats or direct via telephone. Find the full list here.

Nandoโ€™s

Nandoโ€™s tweeted on 29 April that theyโ€™re not able to confirm when theyโ€™ll be opening shop. The vowed that an announcement would follow in due course. Earlier today, Nandoโ€™s tweeted:

โ€œWeโ€™re all firing it up, getting streetwise and feeding those in need. For now, weโ€™re all lovinโ€™ it.โ€

As a fun little twist, Nandoโ€™s used the hashtag #StreetwisePERiPERiMcBurgerโ€ and tagged both KFC and McDonalds in the post. The lockdown truly unites everyone, everyone mortal enemies, it seems.

McDonaldโ€™s

McDโ€™s accepted Nandoโ€™s challenge and tweeted: โ€œWe ainโ€™t chicken, letโ€™s put the beef aside and feed the nation. What do you say, KFC, Chicken Licken, Burger King, Wimpy, Steers, Hungry Lion?โ€

โ€œWhile we are excited to serve you, we are only able to open selected restaurants with delivery at this time. We promise to keep you updated as more restaurants open. Hereโ€™s the list of the first set of restaurants.โ€

McDonaldโ€™s will return on 2 May, however, only selected restaurants will be operational. A full list of restaurants opening on 2 May can be found below.

Debonairs

The team confirmed that they will be opening for delivery, however, only a select number of restaurants will return to business as usual. Debonairs also shared the measures they would be implementing under level 4 lockdown restrictions.

โ€œAs of 1 May 2020, the lockdown restrictions will be partially lifted to Level 4, which means that Debonairs Pizza will be opening for delivery. Weโ€™re excited to be able to deliver our amazing pizza to our customers once. Unfortunately, not all of our restaurants will be in a position to open for delivery onlyโ€.

Still to be confirmed

Wimpy

Chicken Licken

Steers

Hungry Lion

RocoMamas
