Western Cape has 9,246 Covid-19 cases.

Western Cape Covid-19 cases jumped by 739 to 9,246 while deaths also increased to 156, premier Alan Winde said on Sunday.

In a statement, Winde said there were 3,521 recoveries, 360 patients in hospital and more than 90,700 tests conducted to date.

โ€œWe are pleased to report that over 3,500 people in the province have recovered from Covid-19 infections. The rate of recovery in Witzenberg now stands at 70% of all cases, and in the western region, half of all recorded cases to date have recovered. These are especially promising numbers as both of these areas are considered hotspots in the province,โ€ he said.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

As of 1pm on 17 May, the Western Cape has 5569 active cases of Covid-19, with a total of 9246 confirmed cases and 3521 recoveries.

Winde said the Western Cape death rate stands at 1.68% of the total caseload.

โ€œOur data also shows us that the overwhelming majority of Covid-19 positive people who have died in the province have had one or more co-morbidities. It is therefore imperative that vulnerable residents take extra precautions,โ€ he said.

Earlier on Sunday, KwaZulu Natal premier Sihle Zikalala said as of Saturday the province had recorded 17 new cases but no new deaths.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

On Saturday night, health minister Zweli Mkhize said the country had recorded 14,355 Covid-19 cases with 261 deaths.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

To help stop the spread of Covid-19 infections, socially distance yourself, wear a mask in public spaces, and sanitise your hands as often as possible.

There are two central problems facing SA as we navigate the uncharted territory of the coronavirus.

The first is to arrest the spread of the virus and minimise death. So far SA has done its best. The quick enforcement of a national lockdown has slowed down our progress towards the scary situation Italy, and now the US, found themselves.

A lockdown is not a solution; it merely delays what can happen if a country does not have the capacity to test, trace, isolate and treat.

Countries that have done this well have been able to normalise life the soonest.

SA is now on the brink of an uncontrollable spread of the virus, given our rising numbers. There are signs it has now reached townships in the Western Cape and Gauteng. Once in informal settlements, the state can never be able to control it.

But there is something we ordinary people can do. If you don’t want to get infected or infect others, you must socially distance yourself, wear a mask in public spaces, and sanitise your hands as frequently as possible.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

If you take personal responsibility, you might live to tell your grandchildren about the plague – just like my grandfather survived and told his grandchildren about the 1918 Spanish flu.

Coronavirus a chance to rebuild broken fabric of black family life

Men don’t need assistant wives and liquids to lubricate throats when they could be at home with wives and kids.

OPINION

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

The long-term solution is indeed a vaccine, estimated with 18 months. Science is, eventually, capable of either killing or managing viruses. HIV has now been subdued.

The second problem is an economic one. This will prove to be the most difficult and long-term problem SA will face post-Covid-19.

The short-term goal is to ensure people have something to eat during lockdown. Social grants and food parcels are desperate measures in that regard, but can only be sustained for a short period.

Government is aware of the severity of the economic disaster coming our way. That is why President Cyril Ramaphosa is preparing to move to level 3 even when infections are rising.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

But Ramaphosa will not prevent the economic disaster. While he has promised a plan, experience has taught us his plans don’t work. How many plans has he announced since he took office? Which one of them has grown the economy? Which one has created jobs?

There are gullible people who told us to expect Ramaphosa to deal with corruption swiftly. Who among his corrupt comrades in the ANC is in jail today?

If you have lost your job because of Covid-19, don’t expect to get it back because of a promise from the Union Buildings. What we know is that there will be too many unemployed people after Covid-19, and the state will be so broke it will not be able to offer any assistance.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

We are getting into a situation where Steve Biko would say, “Black man, you are on your own.” While we trust the economy will eventually recover, we know it will take a decade or more to be where it used to be – which was not an ideal economic situation in the first place.

Cyril would rather let millions starve than cut bloated cabinet
50% unemployed after lockdown are not numbers; they are real human beings with mouths and stomachs

OPINION

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

This is the time when we owe each other the truth. South Africans must prepare to taste what other Africans in countries like Zimbabwe and Mozambique are used to – living without expecting anyone to give you a job.

In our new normal, people will have to assist each other. But, more importantly, people must learn to do something for themselves. The era of employment is over, and may not come back in our lifetime. So, brace yourself.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

President Cyril Ramaphosa checks out the Covid-19 ward at Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, with health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize.

The government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic is not sustainable and will cause serious harm to the country’s healthcare system in the long run.

This is the view of a group of 38 public and private healthcare doctors across the country who wrote a scathing open letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa and health minister Zweli Mkhize.

The group have warned that the government’s decision to plough every resource into the fight against Covid-19 has led to other healthcare needs that affect the majority of South Africans being neglected.

The doctors described the government’s response to coronavirus as “driven by fear and panic”.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

The group is made up of 23 public health doctors and 15 private doctors.

The list of doctors include general practitioners, anaesthetists, gynaecologists, paediatricians, ophthalmologists and orthopaedic surgeons among others.

They raised concerns about non-Covid-19 chronic diseases such as TB, HIV/Aids, malnutrition, influenza and pneumonia being overlooked when they actually kill more people than coronavirus.

The doctors said the decision will cause irreparable harm to the healthcare system post Covid-19.

They accused the government of only being concerned with saving Covid-19 patients while neglecting non-Covid patients.

Health department spokesperson Popo Maja said it was insincere for the doctors to make such utterances as every action the government was taking was towards saving lives.

Don’t forget TB, SA’s biggest killer, in focus on Covid-19, experts warn

The global response to the Covid-19 pandemic and protracted lockdowns could spell disaster for those living with tuberculosis.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

“It is very insincere for those guys to say that Covid-19 has swallowed healthcare. It’s a lack of sound medical training to say that measures that are taken to control the pandemic, as we have right now, deprive citizens of healthcare,” Maja said. “None of the public healthcare, except for elective surgery, have been halted.

“All the extraordinary measures we are taking during this pandemic is to save lives of South Africans.”

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

According to the doctors, 446, 544 people in SA die from non-Covid-19 causes a year,
totalling 1,200 deaths a day with 120 perishing from TB, 116 from influenza and pneumonia among others.

They said that other healthcare services which focus on the majority of South Africans have been suspended or halted, including surgeries, while non-Covid-19 patients were
released earlier than usual to make space for coronavirus patients.

“It seems this model [distributive justice ] is no longer being followed in our fight against Covid-19. We fear this will be to the detriment of our ability to provide healthcare services for non-Covid patients both now and for many years to come,” the letter reads.

The Sunday Times yesterday reported that there was a revolt against the lockdown restrictions from scientists, business and labour who called for its lifting as they say it has no scientific basis that it works.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

The doctors who wrote the letter also echoed the same sentiments, saying that the government’s narrative to stop the spread of coronavirus instead of managing it has created an “illusion” that the virus can be avoided altogether.

They said that lockdown, although effective to a certain point, does not stop the spread of the virus.

Since the lockdown was effected on March 26, the number of positive cases have climbed from 218 with no reported deaths to 14,355 with 261 deaths by yesterday.

The medics said they are concerned that Covid-19 has caused the government and citizens in general to react to fear and act in haste.

The group said decisions being made by the government are short-sighted and only consider the short-term fight against Covid-19, at great cost to the future of our public healthcare system.

“We fear that Covid-19 care is overshadowing the non-Covid-19 healthcare needs of patients and our ability to provide for those needs now and in years to come,” they wrote.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

Dr Bonnie Freeman from King Dinizulu Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, who co-authored the letter, said she could not comment on behalf of all the doctors but that she had taken up issues relating to her hospital to the minister.

“This letter is signed by a large number of doctors and I can’t speak on behalf of all of them,” she said.

Unisa students get major boost on data, connectivity ahead of exams

By: illovuonline news team

Pretoria โ€“ Unisa students are set to get a major boost ahead of the May/June 2020 examinations, courtesy of a groundbreaking partnership between Unisa and mobile telecommunications company MTN, the university said on Sunday.

The two organisations recently concluded a business agreement that would see all currently registered Unisa students receive 30GB of data per month (10GB anytime and 20GB night time) for a period of two months from mid-May to mid-July 2020, Unisa said.

The full details of the agreement, including the procedure to access the offer, would be provided to students soon.

The free data to all currently registered students during this period was a necessary and timely intervention by the university to create an enabling environment for students who would sit the non-venue-based exams.

These exams would start on May 25, and it was vital that students had access to sufficient data and connectivity to successfully complete their exams, the statement said.

Unisaโ€™s contribution, worth R59.72 million over the two-month period, was unique and unprecedented, with Unisa offering about 24 million gigabytes during this time to a student body of about 390 000.

While the free data access had been provided specifically as an intervention to facilitate the easy completion of the May/June exams, students could use the data and connectivity during this period to conduct other academic activities, such as the submission of assignments online, online contact with the university and preparations for the online exams.

Unisa principal and vice-chancellor Professor Mandla Makhanya said the coronavirus pandemic and the associated interventions by government and institutions alike had, among others, necessitated the rapid introduction of online modes of doing business across many spheres of society, including in the higher education sector.

Even though Unisa had always been an open distance and e-learning (ODeL) university, the Covid-19 pandemic had compelled it to reconsider some of its academic activities that still required physical application, such as venue-based exams and the submission of hard copy assignments, and confine these strictly to online application.

“As a caring and responsible university, driven by strong values of ubuntu/botho and being fully cognisant of the dire socio-economic conditions that many of our students find themselves in, we took a considered decision that all our students must have access to data, with the university carrying the cost, so that they are enabled to write their exams and succeed in their studies.

“Our partnership with MTN is also ideal in this regard, not only because of the favourable rate they have given us, but most importantly because of the size of their footprint and their reach,” Makhanya said.

MTN Business chief enterprise officer Wanda Matandela said: โ€œWe are proud to partner with Unisa on this important initiative.

“At MTN, we believe in delivering the benefits of a modern, connected life to all South Africans, and this partnership allowed us to collaborate in the interest of enabling continuous learning for the benefit of their students at this difficult time.โ€

How to make extra money during lockdown

Nine ways to bring in some extra cash

By: illovuonline news team
18-05-2020

Get paid to write online

WITH the national lockdown having a major impact on businesses and individual salaries, it is becoming a major concern for families.

Making extra money can help with short-term financial stress.

Listed below are a number of ideas on how to earn extra money during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Check for government schemes and plans

A number of government relief plans have been announced to support people facing financial hardship because of the lockdown.

Look up your local options and make sure that youโ€™re taking advantage of everything that youโ€™re eligible for.

While this is not necessarily making money, it is an essential first step if you need to make up some lost income.

Rent out your car for extra cash

Get paid to write online

Now is the time to be a writer.

There are quite a few websites where you can make money by creating high quality, relevant content.

Start by looking at Listverse โ€“ a website that will pay $100 per accepted article; Longreads โ€“ a long-form content site that pays competitive rates; Back2college โ€“ a site aimed at older students which pays $55+ per accepted article; All Pet Voices โ€“ a pet website that pays $75 per accepted article; iWorkWell โ€“ a website for HR professionals and SMEs that pays $200 per accepted article; Loaded Landscapes โ€“ a photography website that pays $20-150 per accepted article; Income Diary โ€“ a website focused on making money online that pays $200-$500 per accepted article; and A Fine Parent โ€“ a parenting website that pays $75 per accepted article.

Become a virtual assistant

Good communicators who have strong digital skills and excellent organisational skills, could work as a virtual assistant.

There are a number of virtual assistant websites available.

If youโ€™re new to being a VA or PA, you can apply on jobs websites such as Reed, TotalJobs or Glassdoor.

Become a dog walker

Rent out your driveway

If you have some driveway space and live in a busy area or city, you may be able to make an income from renting out that space.

The need for additional parking may have increased in your area, as people are at home more during lockdown and need to park all their household vehicles at once.

Rent out your car

If the public transport in your area is on a skeleton service, or people in your neighbourhood need to make larger purchases, you could also make money by renting out your car.

If youโ€™re considering this, itโ€™s important to weigh the risks against your own situation as car surfaces can hold bacteria and viruses well after people have returned the rental.

Try online tutoring

Now that schools and colleges have closed, thereโ€™s been a huge increase in parents looking for online tutors for their children.

If you have in-depth knowledge around a particular subject, great communication skills, and feel that you have the right temperament to keep your students engaged and nurture their interests, you can apply to a variety of online tutoring websites that link up tutors with students.

Become a delivery driver

Itโ€™s no secret that thereโ€™s a huge demand for delivery drivers at the moment ivery drivers. But it is one of the riskier ways of making money given current transmission rates.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

Become a dog walker

Animal lovers can make friends with some new dogs and earn money too.

Although people are at home on lockdown, some people may have to still work long hours or be unable to take their dogs out, so there are still opportunities to get dog walking gigs.

Take part in psychological experiments

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

You can get paid for anything from taking online questionnaires through to having your eye movements tracked when looking at paintings.

Universities typically recruit students, but they are open to non-students as well.

Look-up Bristol Universityโ€™s current experiments and sign up.

Premier Sihle Zikalala says indications are that all districts in the province will move to Level 3 of the lockdown.

DURBAN – It was the first province in the country to report a COVID-19 case and for a long time, KwaZulu-Natal had the most number of deaths but it has seen a slight decline.

Premier Sihle Zikalala says indications are that all districts in the province will move to Level 3 of the lockdown.

“The province is currently as of today sitting at 10-percent in terms of active cases and has moved down to fourth position countrywide,” Zikalala said.

The premier has warned that a move to Level 3 would still require compliance.

“There are strong indications that as KwaZulu-Natal all our regions may move to level 3. However, there is a caveat in order for that to happen and remain that way, everyone will have to comply with all the non-pharmaceutical approaches to preventing infections,” Zikalala said.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

He says should a new trend of infections be seen in certain districts, they will have to be moved back a level.

Meanwhile, the health MEC says the province is ready to deal with an influx of patients at its health facilities.

More than 6,000 beds have already been prepared.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

The provincial government has appealed to people to continue adhering to lockdown regulations and precautionary measures.

Some South Africans are making a lot of noise about the ban on alcohol sales during the country’s Covid-19 response. So why did the country go dry? Take a look at the numbers behind the decision.

Eight hundred and thirty one new cases of Covid-19 have been detected in South Africa, with 91% of those in the Western and Eastern Cape, the health ministry said on Saturday.

This brings the total number of case in the country to 14 355.

“Regrettably we report a further 14 Covid-19 related deaths – this brings the total national deaths to 261,” said Health Minister Zweli Mkhize in his daily bulletin.

“We wish to express our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who cared for the deceased.”

As recent as May 10, there were warnings that traveling between provinces during the inter-provincial grace period had seen a spike in numbers in the two regions.

Eastern Cape Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba announced 57 new cases last Sunday morning alone.

The grace period was to allow those who had been on a hard lockdown to get home, or change locations due to a work contract.

Health minister Zweli Mkhize.

Another 14 South Africans have died of Covid-19, bringing the national death toll to 261, health minister Zweli Mkhize said on Saturday night.

Western Cape has 149 fatalities, KwaZulu Natal 45 and the Eastern Cape 32, with Gauteng recording one new fatality bringing the provincial total up to 25.

Mkhize said SA’s mortality rate, 1.8%, remains well below the global average which is currently 6.6%.

In addition, he said, the country’s recovery rate is 42.4%, above the global average of 38%. A total of 6,478 patients in SA have recovered from Covid-19.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country is 14,355 with 831 new cases identified in the last 24-hour cycle of testing.

The Eastern Cape and Western Cape combined comprise 91% of the day’s new cases, said the minister.

The Western Cape’s 8,404 cases comprise 58,5% of the national total, while the Eastern Cape has 1,812 confirmed cases.

The next most affected provinces are Gauteng with 2,262 cases and KwaZulu-Natal with 1,498.

The other provinces’ case numbers are: Free State 153; Mpumalanga 68; North West 64; Limpopo 59 and Northern Cape 35.

Testing has ramped up substantially. So far, 439,559 tests have been conducted with 18,004 done in the last 24-hour cycle.

Commenting on the possible easing of lockdown restrictions, the minister said: “I am sure many South Africans are eagerly looking forward to a return to normality, albeit a ‘new normal’.โ€

“I would thank each and every one of you for your tenacity, stoicism and true partnership with government. Together we succeeded in flattening the curve, which facilitated ramping up and cohesion of our health care system as well as preparation of our spaces as we resume our economic and social development.”

Mkhize said the country had screened over 10-million people [10,737,341], and had identified 376 sites for quarantine nationally with 30,823 quarantine beds.

“The process of easing lockdown regulations is a highly consultative one where various stakeholder inputs are taken into account to influence implementation.”

He said decisions were guided by World Health Organization recommendations for easing lockdown restrictions, which are:

Strong surveillance, cases are declining and transmission is controlled

Health systems capacity is in place to detect, isolate, test and treat every case and trace very contact

That outbreak risks are minimized especially in settings like facilities and nursing homes

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒhttps://illovuonline.news.blog/

That preventive measures are in place in workplaces, schools and other places that are essential for people to go

That importation of cases can be managed

That communities are fully educated, engaged and empowered to adjust to the new norm.
