The South African government has reacted to the controversial death of George Floyd – In a statement issued by Minister Naledi Pandor, the government addressed the racially-charged violence that has taken hold in the United States of America – This comes after the ANC called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene.

The South African government has weighed in on the murder of George Floyd and the resulting chaos that ensued. On behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa and the citizens of South Africa International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor expressed sorrow at the incident and subsequent unrest:

โ€œThe violence that has characterised some of the protests seriously detracts from drawing international awareness to the legitimate concerns about violence against defenceless black people and other minorities in America.โ€ SA called on everyone in the country to exercise restraint when responding to the frustration expressed by citizens: “South Africa calls on all in America especially the security forces to exercise maximum restraint in responding to the anger and frustration felt by many of its citizens’ friends and international partners.”

“The regrettable death of Mr Floyd presents the USA with an opportunity to address fundamental issues of human rights such as freedom dignity and equality. Just as the people of America supported South Africa in its legitimate struggle against apartheid, South Africa too supports the clarion calls for practical action to address the inadequacies highlighted by protesters civil society and human rights organisations.” The struggle endured by South Africa gives the minister hope for the future of America: โ€œRecalling the steps post-apartheid South Africa bravely undertook as part of its new constitutional dispensation we are convinced that America – a beacon of freedom for many worldwide – has the ability to directly focus on healing and peace and achieve an outcome that prioritises respect for and promotion of fundamental freedoms for all Americans.โ€ The nation called on leaders across the globe to work together to address “South Africa calls on all leaders to work together to end violence and to develop a set of measures that would serve to end the insecurity and harm experienced by many members of the African American community.” Illovuonline news reported that the ANC had called on Ramaphosa and the SA government to use diplomatic channels to aid America during this difficult time of unrest and uncertainty.

The 56-year-old principal tested positive on Tuesday.

A North West school was forced to close after a 56-year old principal tested positive for Covid-19.

The North West education department said the principal reported that he was not feeling well and decided to see a doctor.

NW education spokesperson Elias Malindi said on arrival the doctor suggested a test for Covid-19 since the school principal was showing symptoms of the disease.

“The results confirmed the positive status on Tuesday and immediately the principal was subjected to a 14 days self-quarantine,” Malindi said.

This happened as the schools are preparing for re-opening. Some school principals and school management team had been reporting for work in preparation for the re-opening of schools.

North West education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela was shocked by the news.

“As the department we are very much shocked to learn about these news. We are working with the department of health who have advised us to close the school with immediate effect.

We will rely on their expert advice throughout this period”, said Matsemela. Matsemela said the school will not be opened until all necessary investigations have been concluded.

Salons hopefully hair and beauty care could soon make the cut on level 3

There are about 90,000 people active in the hair and beauty sector, a R300bn industry.

While there is no clarity about whether salons, spas and tattoo parlours will be allowed to operate during lockdown level 3, the beauty and hair industry is viewing the government’s finalisation of guidelines as a sure sign of imminent reopening.

The government sent a letter to the Employers Organisation for Hairdressing, Cosmetology and Beauty (EOHCB) on Monday to advise it was finalising guidelines for the reopening of the industry.

In a statement on Facebook, the organisation said that because of the sensitivity and confidentiality of the matter, the letter could not be published in full.

“However, it is evident that the protocols and/or guidelines are enjoying governmentโ€™s urgent attention and will, once made available, allow personal care services to resume under alert level 3, subject to the implementation and execution of these protocols and/or guidelines,” it said.

EOHCB national manager Cobus Grobler confirmed to SowetanLIVE’s sister publication TimesLIVE on Tuesday that the government had responded to the demand to introduce personal care services by saying it was working on the guidelines.

However, there had been no indication whether those guidelines are for operating under level 3.

“I am seeking clarity on which level in the lockdown, but we do know government is finalising the guidelines.”

In the statement on Facebook, the organisation said it had engaged with the appropriate minister to reintroduce personal care services under level 3.

“Should this not happen in the near future, an urgent application will be launched to set aside such part of the regulations that prohibit personal care services from being rendered during level 3. As part of this process, the EOHCBโ€™s legal representatives dispatched letters of demand to government, including the appropriate minister with whom the EOHCB has been dealing with directly.

“On June 1 a written response was dispatched by the ministry to the EOHCBโ€™s legal representatives, among others, stating that the relevant department is in the process of drafting the necessary protocols and/or guidelines for the opening of business activities including hairdressing, beauty treatments, makeup, nail salons, piercing and tattoo parlours, for the resuming of these business operations. These protocols and/or guidelines are critical as they are intended to assist in the prevention of the spread of the coronavirus as well as to protect the lives of workers and their clients. The department is expected to finalise the protocols and guidelines by the end of this week.”

Body of KZN girl, 6, ‘snatched from mom’s car’ found in bushes

Durban – Rescue teams have recovered the body of a 6-year-old girl who was reported as kidnapped in Glendale on Sunday night.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said IPSS Medical Rescueโ€™s Search and Rescue division assisted SAPS K9 Search & Rescue in the search of the girl.

Herbst said IPSS Medical Rescueโ€™s Search and Rescue division assisted SAPS K9 Search & Rescue went to search the area after information was received by Umhlali SAPS detectives.

“With the help of SAPS K9 Search & Rescue dogs, the body of the 6-year-old was located. We commend the dedicated officers and detectives who persevered for the results that were required. We would also like to thank the farming community and residents of Glendale that assisted in the search,” Herbst said.

It is alleged Alexia Nyamadzawo was snatched near Shakaskraal, north of Durban, from the back seat of her motherโ€™s car. A picture of the Umhlali Preparatory School Grade 1 pupil was shared on social media as a frantic search for her continued.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said Umhlali SAPS were investigating a case of kidnapping at the time of the girl’s disappearance.

Meanwhile, police have slammed social media reports claiming the girl’s mother was involved in the kidnapping.

On Tuesday, reports surfaced on social media alleging the mother played a part in the incident and was “covering it up by claiming a kidnap had taken place”.

“Unfortunately, we cannot divulge any further information as our investigations are at a sensitive stage. We are also concerned with reports on social media that have the potential to jeopardise our investigations.

“We condemn those that hinder police work by posting sensitive information concerning the investigation on social media,” SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker said.

Your horoscope for the week ahead: A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius will help you achieve your goals

By: illovuonline news team

Think with confidence โ€” the Moon is the cosmic womb that nurtures your dreams

The Moon this week will magnify all the dynamic celestial energy that’s taking place as she reaches her Full Moon phase in Sagittarius on Friday. Four Lunar Eclipses will grace the Earth’s skies in 2020. They will all be penumbral eclipses that will turn the Moon into a darker silver colour for a few hours instead of the copper-coloured “Blood Moons” of Total Eclipses. This Lunar Eclipse on Friday, June 5, will be visible to areas of the Southern Hemisphere in Africa, Australia and Central and Southern Australia.

The Full Moon will fire up your willpower. If you feel a burst of enthusiasm and optimism, hang on to that feeling. The Moon is the cosmic womb that nurtures your dreams so that they grow and manifest. The Full Moon in the sign of Sagittarius will provide the chance to plant the acorn that will turn into a mighty oak. Think with confidence. Be bold. Believe in yourself and you can achieve the miraculous.

Here is your horoscope for the week.

Aries

You are striving to your utmost ability to create a better future, but life, it seems, never takes you to the point when you can feel fully secure that you have done it. Problems come and go. They are never far away. They boomerang back. They keep you on our toes. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius will fire up your resolve to make a decisive move. Also remember to appreciate the magic and joy in the journey that is your life. You are entitled to success. Believe in that and you’ll get what you want.

Taurus

The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius is making you keenly aware of the need to escape a situation that has entrapped you. There are things you hate doing. They are a pain. The hurdles you face have brought a certain plan to a standstill. You’d be quite willing to kiss them all goodbye and never look back. A way will be found to let them bother you less. You may resolve some of these issues, in part, with a shift in your mental attitude. That said, events this week are due to help you remove some of what you can’t stand.

Gemini

Right at the moment, you are re-evaluating your relationship to a certain someone, a group or a plan. You are no longer so sure how you fit in, what your role is, or what it should be. That sounds like bad news but think about it โ€” only by going through this process can you truly come to a deeper understanding of your situation. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius will lead to greater self-awareness which will, in turn, lead to the resolution of an emotional entanglement. You’ll be surprised how things turn around in the best possible way.

Cancer

You are no longer so sure how well you know a person to whom you used to be very close. Unbeknownst to you something truly promising is taking place at a deep unconscious level. Some essential insights will come this week. Trust your intuition and do not hesitate to opine when necessary. You’ll be surprised with the positive response you receive. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius will get you in touch with your innermost feelings and offer the opportunity to deepen the bond between you.

Leo

When music is playing quietly in the background, you don’t often notice how much it is disturbing your concentration until it gets turned off. Mild discomfort, it seems, often creates more stress than you realize. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius will sensitize you to what is disturbing your concentration. There is so much causing you to lose your focus. A calm and soothing source of celestial energy will calm your nerves and allow you to discover something that fires up your imagination and promises much fulfilment and happiness.

Virgo

You seem to be ensnared by a complex emotional conundrum. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius will help you recognize what is impeding your progress and preventing you from reaching a heartfelt goal. Positive energy is beaming on you from a friendly area of the sky. A shift in your attitude is going to open a door to new opportunities that will radically change your way of life in a wonderful way. Take your time this week and trust that what you need will slowly make its way to you. If there’s something you haven’t got and can’t seem to get, this can only be because the Universe is planning to give you something even better.

Libra

Fear has the power to rob you of the most precious gift of all, that is, of living your life without restraints. Freedom comes when you have no fear. You have the power to influence an important matter. Take your time. Mull over your options. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius will restore your energy a bit and you may experience the happy realization your great inspiring hope is not an empty dream. It’s an accurate insight into the potential that the future holds for you.

Scorpio

Despite the fact that you are going through a series of intense dramas, all is going to work out well in the end. It’s all simply a question of time. You have enough personal power at your disposal to carve out the future in a most beautiful and fulfilling way. There is no need to yield submissively to someone’s point of view. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius will endow you with the power of sound reasoning to express your thoughts.

Sagittarius

That bug called creativity is seeking expression. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius wants to turn negatives into positives. Stress is constructive when it stimulates the quest for improvement. Time is precious and so is energy, so use yours wisely now and you can achieve a great deal. There is much magic in store. Anyone who is not now being fair will act a lot more reasonably in the future. You would be wise to believe this. Be patient, yes, but be focused like an impeccable warrior. Be alert to what’s happening around you.

Capricorn

Things may not be ideal but when it comes down to it, they never are. It’s a good thing you are so skilled at dealing with practical matters. You have a proven track record of success which is why you are so highly respected for your expertise. You are on the right path with a certain plan or strategy you are working on. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius will show you how to constructively use your intelligence to score a big victory. You will fly above the world like an eagle. You will get the assistance you require plus and an incisive insight that will lead to a Eureka moment. Your potential is as limitless as the sky above.

Aquarius

A crucial astrological shift will remove a blindfold from your eyes that has been preventing you from seeing the truth. You will be able to see clearly what you have been too preoccupied to see before. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius will show you what’s wrong and how to fix it. You’ll learn more by quiet observation than by being confrontational. Although, you’re not yet aware of it, you do possess the wisdom to put everything right. Things don’t have to carry on as they are. Any resistance you are encountering will pass. Persevere with your vision and the universe will reward you with good news.

Pisces

Happiness can and will be achieved if you pursue a course of action that is based on being true to your principles, while also being sensitive to those of a certain person you care about. The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius is connecting you with a deep source of celestial inspiration. Focus on your brightest opportunity and throw yourself into it with energy and enthusiasm. Give an important heartfelt dream all you’ve got. If something irritating is becoming intolerable, it may be pushing you into making a long overdue and highly positive decision.

5 important things happening in South Africa today

By: illovuonline news team

Hereโ€™s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:

Coronavirus: Global infections have increased to 6.25 million cases, with the death toll rising past 367,000. In South Africa, the country saw a 1,455 jump in cases taking the total confirmed to 35,812. Deaths rose to 755, and recoveries also increased to 18,313, leaving the country with 16,744 active cases.

Court battles: While the High Court has found that some regulations issued for lockdown levels 3 and 4 are irrational, unconstitutional and invalid, the Judge Davis did not rule on matters that are facing other court challenges โ€“ such as the tobacco ban. Two cases related to the tobacco ban are ongoing, brought by free trade group FITA, and tobacco companies led by BATSA. Government, meanwhile, is doing its best to delay the case, seeking once again for the courts to delay the process further.

School blocks: If tenderpreneurs blocking deliveries of PPEs to schools wasnโ€™t enough of a burden on governmentโ€™s plans to reopen schools, the Department of Basic Education is now facing several court challenges trying to prevent learners from getting back to class โ€“ while criminals in KwaZulu Natal are targeting school districts as a source of face masks and sanitisers, further delaying the process. Schools are expected to welcome learners back on 8 June 2020.

Unbanned: Helping the poor is legal again, after the Gauteng government withdrew a directive which effectively banned non-profit groups from distributing food to the needy in the province. The directive was facing a court challenge from NPO Cradle of Hope, which only wanted to give sandwiches and soup to the poor, but was blocked from doing so. Following the withdrawal, the Gauteng government was ordered to pay the groupโ€™s legal costs โ€“ and those in need can now get a warm meal.

Alcohol abuse: Alcohol has just gone back on sale and some hospitals are already reporting a surge in trauma cases related to alcohol abuse. Retailers experienced massive queues when sales opened on Monday, but now report that things have settled. It is also expected that the illicit trade, which blossomed during lockdown, will now also start to decline โ€“ however, there are supporters out there for government to rethink the unbanning of alcohol sales altogether.

Markets: South Africaโ€™s rand jumped more than 1% to a two and a half month high on Tuesday in an emerging market rally spurred by growing hopes for a global economic recovery, prompting investors to ditch safe-havens for high yielding assets. The currency ended May on the front foot, buoyed by the South African central bankโ€™s support for the economy, including a fourth lending rate cut in as many months. On Wednesday the rand was at R17.11 to the dollar, R21.53 to the pound and R19.17 to the euro.

According to the report, about 1-3% of those infected in the province may die from the virus.

About 80% of the Eastern Cape population are likely to contract Covid-19.

This was the estimation made by the Eastern Cape department of health in a report presented to the Eastern Cape coronavirus command unit.

Of those infected, 80% are expected to present mild symptoms or be asymptomatic, while 15% might require hospitalisation and 5% are expected to be in need of high care.

About 1-3% may die from the virus, the report said. As of June 1, the province has recorded 4,111 positive Covid-19 cases, 82 deaths and 2,123 recoveries.

Eastern Cape provincial command council chair and premier Oscar Mabuyane said the province was saddened by the loss of lives, but continued to work together with social partners and the public to fight the virus.

Covid-19 claims seven lives at psychiatric facility in Eastern Cape

Covid-19 has hit a Kirkwood psychiatric facility hard, with seven deaths recorded among the 29 patients and six employees infected.

“We welcome the report from the department of health, which details its operations for screening, testing, quarantine and isolation of people with the virus,” Mabuyane said.

He said the provincial government would continue to support the health department in providing all the required resources to fight the virus.

Twenty-nine people have died from the Covid-19 in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro with 18 deaths recorded in the OR Tambo district, 14 in the Chris Hani district, 12 in Buffalo City, four in the Amathole district, four in Sarah Baartman and one in the Joe Gqabi district municipality.

Of those, 26,3% are aged between 30-39, 21,3% between 40-49, 15,5% between 50-59,15,4% in the 20-29 age group, 8,2% between 60-69, 5,2% between 10-19, 4,3% aged 70 and above, and 3,1% in the 0-9 age group.

According to the report, 191 public and private healthcare workers – 71 of whom are from the Bay – have tested positive for the virus. Of the rest, 63 are from Buffalo City, 28 from OR Tambo, 14 from Amathole, eight from Chris Hani, three from Sarah Baartman, two from Joe Gqabi and two from Alfred Nzo. About 21,451 people in the province have been quarantined in their homes, with 599 quarantined at various facilities and 687 in isolation, the report states.

For the protection of healthcare workers, the department had more than 18 million aprons, 15,229 biohazard bags, 32,945 boot covers, 786,260 goggles/face shields/visors, 42,469 gowns, 717,140 particulate respirators (grade N95), more than one million surgical masks, 34,761 coveralls, 557,724 surgical gloves, more than 1.7 million examination gloves, and 246,238 1litre bottles of sanitiser, the report said.

Of this, Nelson Mandela Bay received 513,450 gloves, 12.9 million aprons, 2,700 bottles of disinfectant, 595 pairs of goggles, 15,508 gowns (different types), 20,752 sanitisers of various sizes, more than 1.03 million masks (different types), 478 overshoes, 24,530 thermometers and 85 visors.

Trump angers American religious leaders with Bible photo op

American religious leaders on Tuesday castigated Donald Trump for posing in front of a church holding a Bible after peaceful protesters were violently cleared from the surrounding area.

U.S. President Donald Trump holds a Bible as he visits outside St. John’s Church across Lafayette Park from the White House Monday, June 1, 2020, in Washington.

“It was traumatic and deeply offensive, in the sense that something sacred was being misused for a political gesture,” Washington’s Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde said on public radio station NPR.

The Republican billionaire, whose supporters include many evangelical Christians, used “the symbolic power of our sacred text, holding it in his hand as if it was a vindication of his positions and his authority,” she said.

The historic St John’s Episcopal church is across the street from Lafayette Park, which faces the White House and has been the epicenter of the protests in Washington since Friday.

The church was defaced with graffiti and damaged in a fire during a demonstration on Sunday night.

On Monday protesters were demonstrating there peacefully when law enforcement including military police used tear gas to disperse them — clearing a path for the president to walk from the White House to the church for the photographs.

The protest was televised, and the backlash as the images spread was swift and furious.

“The protest at that point was entirely peaceful,” Budde said. “There was absolutely no justification for this.”

Trump on Monday adopted a martial tonein a nationwide address he delivered just before the church visit, in which he threatened a military crackdown after the biggest civil unrest in decades.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been demonstrating their anger since the May 25 death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man killed by police in Minneapolis.

The gatherings have been largely peaceful, but some have degenerated in to riots.

Other Episcopalian leaders denounced Trump’s visit to the church as “disgraceful and morally repugnant.”

“Simply by holding aloft an unopened Bible he presumed to claim Christian endorsement and imply that of The Episcopal Church,” bishops from New England said in a statement.

On Tuesday the president and his wife followed up with a visit to the St John Paul II National Shrine in the capital’s northeast, immediately infuriating the country’s Catholic leadership as well.

“I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles,” Washington’s Archbishop Wilton Gregory said in a statement.

The pontiff, who died in 2005, “certainly would not condone the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, scatter or intimidate them for a photo opportunity in front of a place of worship and peace,” he added.

Get ready for the full ‘strawberry’ moon on Friday

Friday’s full moon, also known as the strawberry moon, will light up the night sky in most of the Western Hemisphere (including North America), but that’s not the case the world over.

In much of the Eastern Hemisphere, the full moon on Friday (June 5) will showcase a penumbral lunar eclipse, meaning that the strawberry moon will appear dark and silvery.

For anyone bummed out about missing the penumbral lunar eclipse, just wait one month; on July 4, North America will get a chance to see a different penumbral lunar eclipse, according to Space.com, a sister site of Live Science.

The moon’s exact moment of fullness happens at 3:12 p.m. EDT (19:12 UTC) on Friday, according to NASA. However, because the moon won’t be visible in North America at the point, your best bet is to gaze skyward at moonrise, when the slightly-less-full moon will begin its ascent at 8:23 p.m. EDT (shortly before sunset at 8:31 p.m. EDT), according to Travel and Leisure.

The strawberry moon is named for the relatively short strawberry growing season in northeastern North America; it’s a name recognized by most Algonquin tribes, the now-defunct Maine Farmer’s Almanac reported in the 1930s, according to NASA.

In fact, June is prime strawberry growing time for most of the United States, according to the food site Epicurious, which also pointed out that strawberries are a favorite, ranking sixth as the country’s most popular fruit. If you have a sweet tooth, go for wild strawberries, which tend to have sweeter, tangier flavors than the more firm, waterier store-bought ones, Live Science previously reported.

Other names for this full moon include the mead moon, honey moon, rose moon and LRO moon (for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which was launched toward the moon June 18, 2009), according to NASA. Whatever you call it, this will be the last full moon of spring, before the summer solstice on June 20.

On the other side of the world, June’s full moon will feature a penumbral lunar eclipse. Those in the Southern Hemisphere, including Africa, Australia and Central and Southern Asia, will see the penumbral lunar eclipse in its entirety, while the eastern coast of South America will see the end of the penumbral eclipse at moonrise, according to Space.com.

There are three kinds of lunar eclipses, which can happen only during a full moon. During a total lunar eclipse, when the moon passes directly through Earth’s full shadow (or umbra), the moon appears blood-red, colored by the world’s sunrises and sunsets. During a partial lunar eclipse, the umbra darkens only part of the full moon, making a chunk of the moon appear darker than the rest.

For the penumbral lunar eclipse this Friday, the strawberry moon is dipping 57% into the penumbra, or outer shadow, of Earth, Travel and Leisure reported. The lunar show begins at 1:45 p.m. EDT (17:45 UTC), but to catch the maximum eclipse, tune in at 3:24 p.m. EDT (19:24 UTC), according to timeanddate.com, which explained that “the moon is below the horizon during this eclipse, so it is not possible to view it in New York.” The penumbral eclipse ends 3 hours and 18 minutes later at 5:04 p.m. EDT (21:04 UTC).

To watch a live stream of the eclipse, tune into the Virtual Telescope, which will get a peek at part of the penumbral lunar eclipse as it rises over Rome.

The celestial show doesn’t end there. According to timeanddate.com, “a solar eclipse always occurs about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse.” In this case, the solar eclipse โ€” when the moon is directly between the sun and Earth โ€” will happen on June 21. But, just like the strawberry moon’s penumbral lunar eclipse, this eclipse won’t be visible in North America.
